Hundreds of students packed the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair earlier this month to meet representatives from more than 50 HBCUs and organizations. Students in Grades 8-12 picked up information on admissions, financial aid, testing and majors.
The event took place on Friday, Feb. 16 at The Universities at Shady Grove and featured a college preparation workshop for middle school students and parents, a discussion on college life, help with completing the FAFSA and scholarship information.
“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have such an important and valuable role in our society,” said Dr. Karen Crews, MCPS Director of Student Well-being and Achievements. “We want to ensure that MCPS students are not only exposed to HBCUs, but have the opportunity to engage with representatives and hear from alumni to explore the various opportunities available to them.”
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students earned more than $7 million in scholarships during fall regional on-the-spot admissions events held at various high schools ahead of the 16th Annual HBCU Fair. A total of 370 students participated in 590 interviews with college representatives resulting in 533 acceptances.
