Public Input Requested on Changes to Rockville’s Forestry and Tree Regulations

The City of Rockville will be holding two public forums in May on amendments to Rockville’s forestry and tree preservation ordinance.

Per the news release: The first, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, is tailored for applicants, developers and industry professionals with a technical interest who already have background knowledge of state and city law.

The second, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, is for the broader community and will include an overview of state and city law, as well as the proposed amendments.

In 2023, the Maryland Legislature passed a bill amending state law to reduce the gradual loss of forest and tree canopy throughout the state. The bill instituted a variety of changes intended to increase the amount of forest and tree canopy at a statewide level.

Amendments to the city’s ordinance will bring Rockville’s code into compliance with the state legislation.

The Planning Commission was briefed on proposed amendments to the ordinance on Wednesday, March 27. Details on the proposed amendments are available in a staff report with the March 27 agenda.

The amendments are tentatively scheduled for introduction to the Mayor and Council at their Monday, May 6, which begins at 6 p.m.
