Gaithersburg-based residential mortgage lender, Homespire Mortgage, announced last week its support of $20,000 for World Central Kitchen (WCK), a not-for-profit organization founded by renowned Chef José Andrés. WCK provides meals for people impacted by natural disasters and other crises around the world. The $20,000 donation was made possible through the success of Homespire MOVE, a new company health and wellness campaign that encourages employees to record their physical exercise, like hiking, biking, swimming and walking. Reaching a combined goal of 100,000 minutes of physical exercise meant the company would contribute financial aid to WCK.

Per the press release: Employees tracked and recorded their total minutes of activity from April 8-29, with the company donating $0.10 for every minute tallied. Homespire’s donation supports WCK’s #ChefsForUkraine response to distribute much needed meals to refugees throughout the nation’s war-torn communities as the organization continues to provide 250,000 daily meals and food kits through its 2,000+ distribution sites in Ukraine.

Maryland

Personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best & Worst States to Be a Police Officer. Maryland was ranked 5th overall in the report, behind Connecticut, California, Illinois, and the District of Columbia.

Per the report, “Law enforcement is a career that is always in the public eye, whether for heroic reasons or scandal. Currently, our nation’s 800,000 law enforcement officers have even more of a spotlight than usual, though. To start, for the past two years they have been in charge of enforcing COVID-19 restrictions. In addition, there have been quite a few recent high-profile police brutality cases, including officers found guilty for federal civil rights violations leading up to the death of George Floyd. President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech also called for the nation to “fund the police” with better training and resources.”

Montgomery County’s first AAPI Heritage Project is examining the history of AAPI county residents as early as the 1900s By Karen Yee, published on MontgomeryPlanning’s Department Blog

Of the 86,000 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the nation’s repository of historic structures, sites, buildings, districts and objects that are deemed significant to American history, less than 8% relate to Asian Americans and other underrepresented communities. In Montgomery County, where 15% of residents are Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), there is only one locally designated resource associated with AAPI heritage, the Pao-Chi and Yu Ming Pien House. Even this house was only recently recognized—it is located within the Potomac Overlook Historic District, designated in April 2022. In order to address this disparity, Montgomery Planning’s Historic Preservation Office applied for and was awarded a non-capital grant by the Maryland Historical Trust in 2021 to identify historical and cultural resources associated with AAPI communities in Montgomery County.

MoCoSnow

Coming off of a weekend of high temperatures in the low 50s, a steady and chilly rain, and Flood Warnings, many of us will appreciate today’s 65° and sunny more than usual. While we’ll still be about 10° cooler than our average high in the month of May, today will feel a lot warmer than the last two days did with the “RealFeel” at about 73°. Temperatures are expected to climb throughout the week with no rain currently in the forecast until next weekend aside from a slight chance on Thursday or Friday.

Tuesday is expected to be another pleasant day with temperatures reaching the upper 60s and feeling like the mid 70s. Wednesday should bring high temps back into the low 70s with the “RealFeel”pushing 80°. Thursday and Friday should be a couple degrees warmer with a slightly elevated chance or rain (about 25% as of now) and more rain seems to be in the forecast this upcoming weekend, but temperatures arguing to be 20-25° warmer than this past weekend so it won’t be as miserable.
