Maryland’s Ryan Ramsey, a Gaithersburg Native and Resident, Pitches Perfect Game

Ryan Ramsey, who was born in Gaithersburg and currently lives in the city, pitched a perfect game for No. 23 Maryland yesterday. The Terps Beat Northwestern 13-0. Coming into the 2022 season, there had only been 33 in NCAA history — just 19 in nine-inning games.

Per UMTerps, Ramsey became the first Maryland pitcher to toss a perfecto since Dick Reitz on April 10, 1959, against Johns Hopkins — which was the first perfect game in NCAA Division I history. It was the Terps’ first no-hitter since March 1, 2014, when Jake Stinnett no-hit UMass. On the other side, every player in Maryland’s lineup recorded at least a hit as the offense totaled 13 runs on 17 hits.

Good Counsel’s Josh Paschal Drafted By Detroit Lions in Second Round of the NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions surprised many by going defensive line with their first two picks in the draft after selecting Josh Paschal with their second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the 46th overall pick. Paschal is a Prince George’s County native who attended school and played football at Good Counsel in Olney, where he was ranked among the top defensive ends in the country.

Paschal has overcome plenty in his NCAA football career. After a strong freshman season in 2017, he was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma lesion that was discovered on his foot, in August of 2018. It was a rare, aggressive form of skin cancer called acral lentiginous melanoma, or ALM. And it needed to be treated immediately. Josh had multiple surgeries on his foot to remove the cancerous growth and replace the damaged tissue.

Einstein High School’s Arnold Ebiketie Gets Drafted in the Second Round of the NFL Draft

Last night the Atlanta Falcons quickly made a trade to get into position to draft Penn State’e Arnold Ebiketie with the 38th pick in the draft. The 6-2, 250-pound linebacker transferred to Penn State from Temple and was named first-team All-Big Ten in 2021. He had18 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, and seven quarterback hits for the Nittany Lions last season.

Ebiketie originally attended Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville before transferring to Albert Einstein High School in Kensington where he had 21.5 sacks as a senior in 2017. While at Einstein, he also played basketball and was a sprinter and high jumper for the track & field team.

McKnew Park in Burtonsville Will Have a New Playground Soon

The current project at McKnew Local Park in Burtonsville will renovate the existing playground and picnic area for multi-purpose recreation and leisure uses while providing accessibility and stormwater management.

The existing playground was installed in 1998.  It will be removed and a new playground will be installed in its place.  Local park playgrounds are typically 3,500 to 5,000 square feet in size and include playground equipment to meet the needs of children from ages 2-12, and seating for caregivers.  Typical types of equipment include swings, play structures and smaller freestanding pieces.

YMCA Hosting Healthy Kids Day Today (Saturday, April 30)

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is hosting the Y’s annual Healthy Kids Day® on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., encouraging families to take a moment to help kids be kids and set them up for a summer of success. Occurring at nine different locations across the Metropolitan region, including the Bethesda and Silver Spring locations, the day-long event will feature activities such as cooking demonstrations, a puppy parade at YMCA Anthony Bowen, kids’ yoga, STEM activities, farm stands, and water safety to motivate and teach families how to develop and maintain healthy routines at home.

“At the Y, we believe in the potential of all children and each day we work to help kids find that potential within themselves,” said Kristy McCarron, vice president of Community Health and Wellness. “Healthy Kids Day is a fun, free community-wide event to kick off summer and remind us all how important it is for kids to stay active physically and mentally throughout the summer.”

Baronessa Will Close Permanently At The End of April

Baronessa has announced that it will be permanently closing at the end of April. The restaurant, located at 1302 E Gude Drive in Rockville, made the announcement on its website earlier this week. Montgomery Parks will present draft recommendations for the Wheaton Regional Park Master Plan update to the Montgomery Planning Board on May 5, 2022. (The time of the presentation will be posted on the Planning Board agenda closer to the date of the meeting.) Wheaton Regional Park is 536 acres and is the largest park in the southern region of Montgomery County. The park’s initial master plan was created in 1987 and is now being updated to better reflect the current interests of adjacent communities and residents throughout the county.

ICC/MD200 Will Have Periodic Closures The Next Two Weekends

ICC/MD 200 will have periodic double lane closures this weekend between Saturday April 30th at 7am to 5am Monday for paving operations. Work will begin on the westbound  lanes before moving to eastbound lanes and is anticipated to extend into the following weekend of May 7th, May 8th, and May 9th.

ICC History: Maryland Route 200 (MD 200), also known as the Intercounty Connector or ICC, is an 18.8-mile-long (30.3 km), six-lane toll road in the U.S. state of Maryland. A controlled-access highway, it connects Gaithersburg in Montgomery County and Laurel in Prince George’s County, both of which are suburbs of Washington, D.C. The ICC was one of the most controversial Maryland road projects; opposition to the highway stalled the project for decades, and construction did not begin until 60 years after the highway’s initial approval in 1950.

Turn your eyes skyward and enjoy the amazing sites from Observatory Park, home to the historic Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory.

Observatory Park will be dark, but please do not bring a bright flashlight; bring a red light as it will be less intrusive to other watchers. Red cellophane will be available to cover any white light flashlights. Also adjust the brightness of electronic devices. These events are free, but require registration.
