Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Units were called to the 5100 block of Fairglen Lane, off of Fairfax Rd, in Chevy Chase for small fire at a single family home on Thursday evening.
The fire involved an electrical box that was attached to the outside of the home and was quickly put out by firefighters upon arrival. Connected to the electrical box that caught fire was a Supco surge protector that was previously recalled for its potential to cause fires. There was no extension to the fire, no additional smoke, and no injuries.
With the 130th annual Laytonsville Community Parade returning to Laytonsville on Saturday, May 14 “Better Together for 130 Years” after a couple years off due to Covid-related concerns, we wanted to share some history on the town. Information and Pictures courtesy of the Laytonsville Historical Center:
Laytonsville has stood as a crossroad to the history of Maryland for over two centuries. The intersection of the northern district of the town provides a route to the major metropolitan areas of the state– Damascus and Frederick County, to the east to Baltimore, to the south toward Washington, D.C., and to the west the Potomac River. Although in January 1998 Laytonsville is still a cozy town, its small size, 614 acres and a population of 295, belies its long and interesting history.
Johnathan Dunn, choral teacher at Sherwood High School, was named the 2022-2023 Montgomery County Teacher of the Year during a virtual celebration on April 28. Dunn will now go on to compete for Maryland Teacher of the Year. Per MCPS: Dunn has been the choral teacher at Sherwood for nine years. He brings positive energy, love and kindness to everyone he encounters. A joyful and enthusiastic educator, Dunn works tirelessly to see that students benefit from his lessons.
He teaches chorus, piano and music perspectives. Believing that music is a way to connect, he makes the music department a home for everyone. He takes great pride in making sure that all students have an opportunity to express themselves and experience the joy of music, regardless of their background, physical capabilities, learning differences, mental health challenges or musical proficiency. He encourages them all to perform in concerts and get involved in the Rock n‘ Roll Revival production, a 50-year tradition at Sherwood. With a cast of more than 300 students—from the highly skilled to first-time performers—Dunn unites them for a creative three-hour show. He also leads other school events, including vocal direction for the fall musical production and a Night of Jazz event in the spring.
Traffic collisions have closed parts of two major roads in Montgomery County this evening, according to Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County’s Office of Emergency Management.

Three lanes are closed on southbound 270 from Exit 4 (Montrose Rd) to Exit 1 (Democracy Blvd) as a result of a traffic collision. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route and are warned to expect delays.
Maryland’s black bears are leaving their winter dens and as they emerge, they are hungry. Bears will be searching for natural food sources such as acorns, plants, berries, and insects. With natural food sources in short supply until later in the spring, bears can be attracted to anything that smells like food. Homeowners who leave human-generated food sources out in the open may unintentionally draw bears to residential areas. Residents of Maryland’s bear country (Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick Counties in Maryland are all home to black bears, and black bears have occasionally been spotted in Montgomery County) are urged to be proactive and exercise good judgment to avoid creating man-made attractions for bears.

Back in September we let you know that South Block, a smoothie and juice bar best known for their acai bowls, would be opening a new location in Pike & Rose. South Block has been aiming for a summer 2022 opening, and they seem to be on pace as signage has now gone up at the space that’s as formerly occupied by the Residences At Pike & Rose leasing office, right next to the recently opened Call Your Mother Deli (The leasing office has moved to the spot formerly occupied by Nava Health.)
Along with their acai bowls, South Block offers other fruit and vegetable-based bowls, a range of smoothies, and cold pressed juices. They currently have eleven locations throughout DC and Virginia– their Pike & Rose spot will be their first location in Maryland. In addition to their brick and mortar locations, South Block has an online storefront where they sell pre-blended smoothie bowl kits that they deliver throughout the continental United States.
Brady Anderson made a name for himself as the center fielder and lead off hitter for the Baltimore Orioles in the 90s. His sideburns may also be among the most famous to ever exist, but did you know the 3 time All-Star, who once hit 50 home runs in a season, was born in Silver Spring?
Anderson was born at Holy Cross hospital on January 18th, 1964. Though he was born here, he didn’t spend too much time in the area as his family moved to California with his family when he was very young and attended Carlsbad High School before enrolling at the University of California, Irvine prior to being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1985. The Red Sox sent him — along with Curt Schilling — to the Orioles on July 29, 1988 in exchange for Mike Boddicker. Schilling didn’t stick around for too long, but Anderson went on to establish himself as one of the better center fielders and leadoff hitters of the ’90s.
A couple months back we discussed Wootton High School alumnus Utkarsh Ambudkar’s starting role on the CBS sitcom ‘Ghosts’, which debuted in October of last year and was recently renewed for a second season. Ambudkar also has a prominent role on the new Hulu miniseries, The Dropout.
The show is based on the ABC Audio podcast about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. The show touches on experiences that likely motivated Holmes’ deceptions and lies, starting from her formative years as a pre-teen and going all the way to her exposure as a fraud. Ambudkar plays the role of Rakesh Madhava, a biotech engineer and worked at Theranos until 2008.
