Research Row

Back in May of 2021 we let you know that Chadol Korean BBQ would be coming to Research Row in Rockville.

The new Korean BBQ restaurant, which is located at 1403 Research Blvd, Suite A-8, opened last month. As of now its website is pretty bare, but Google offers a menu that consists of a variety of appetizers, a la carte meat dishes, combos, and more. It can be seen below.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it plans to close all 68 of its brick-and-mortar bookstores, pop-ups and shops carrying toys and home goods (including Amazon 4 Star) in the United States and United Kingdom, per Reuters. Amazon has an Amazon 4 Star location in Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and one that was planned for Germantown, with signage at that location recently going up. A call to the Bethesda Amazon 4 Star location led to a message stating the store was temporarily closed until tomorrow. The Germantown location is no longer going to open.

Amazon also has an Amazon Books location in Bethesda, which is closed on Wednesdays. Exact dates for closures will vary by location, and Amazon stated it would help affected employees find roles elsewhere in the company. We will have closing dates for all Montgomery County location as soon as they are available. The company also stated that it would continue its focus on Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market grocery chains. An Amazon Fresh grocery store recently opened in Chevy Chase and one is planned for Gaithersburg. It was recently announced that an Amazon grocery store is in the plans for White Oak Town Center as well.

The last remaining Quizno’s in MoCo has closed. The restaurant, which was located at 1611 E Gude Dr, was cleared out earlier this week and is now listed as “closed permanently” by Google. The phone number for the location is not in working order.

Back in April of 2021, the Bethesda location closed. It was the second to last remaining Quizno’s in the county.

Gaithersburg

Last July we let you know that BurgerFi, an American fast casual restaurant chain focused on hormone-free and antibiotic-free angus hamburgers, french fries, hot dogs, custard, and more, would be coming to Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg.

The restaurant will be opening at 5 Grand Corner Ave, across from Dick’s Sporting Goods and next to Lanzhou Hand Pull Noodles. Signage is now up and construction has progressed as the restaurant gears up for its opening. While an opening date has not yet been provided, we can see it opening this spring.

Montgomery Village

When MoCoShow reader Igor Gindin was perusing old articles from The Washington Post, he came across a story highlighting Rambo’s trip to Montgomery Village. The story may not be as farfetched as it seems, due to Rambo star Sylvester Stallone growing up in Montgomery County, but it’s not exactly what you’d think…

It was July of 1985, and Rambo: First Blood Part II had been released just two months earlier. The movie was now playing at Roth’s Quince Orchard Theater in Gaithersburg. Roth’s was a small theater- the box office was on the outside and there were two theaters when you walked in (one on the left and one on the right). It ended up closing in 1990 when the theaters opened at nearby Rio Washingtonian.

MCPS

Charles W. Woodward High School opened in 1966. Two decades later, in 1987, its students were merged into Walter Johnson High School. Woodward and Walter Johnson High Schools had the same diminished enrollment levels, but MCPS decided to preserve Walter Johnson given the schools larger capacity

After a brief period as a holding school while Springbrook High was being renovated, the building was used to house Tilden Middle School while that school’s facility began a major renovation project. Tilden relocated to its new building during the summer of 2020.
