Downtown Silver Spring

Community members testified in person or virtually during Public Hearing; four work sessions scheduled in December and January.

Wheaton, MD –The Montgomery County Planning Board, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), held a Public Hearing for the Silver Spring Downtown and Adjacent Communities Plan on December 2, 2021. This plan builds upon the success of the 2000 Silver Spring Central Business District Sector Plan to help the area continue to be a regional destination for the next 20 years while supporting sustainable growth and development in the emerging areas of the downtown and adjacent communities. Community members testified in person or virtually during the Planning Board’s Public Hearing. Some community members provided their comments in writing ahead of the Public Hearing for the Board’s consideration.

The Montgomery County Varsity Volleyball Coaches have decided on their 2021 All-County teams.  Each varsity coach gets one vote in determining the County Player of the Year, 1st Team-All County, 2nd Team All-County and Honorable Mention.  Congratulations to all the girls selected this year!

Below are the selections:

Education

At its Dec. 2 business meeting, the Montgomery County Board of Education approved a modified school calendar for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year.

MCPS recognizes that teacher planning time is critical for the preparation of meaningful and engaging lessons for students each day. To support this, three early release days have been added to this school year’s calendar to allow for important work time for staff. Wednesday, Jan. 12; Thursday, March 24; and Wednesday, May 18, 2022 are now early release days for both traditional and innovative calendar schools. MCPS is piloting a variety of out-of-school time opportunities with community partners to provide engaging activities for students during the afternoons on early release days.

Thank you to 97.1 WASH-FM for supporting Bethesda’s Winter Wonderland.  If you can’t make it to the festival, you can still listen to the music live.

The Washington Football Team is on to its fourth kicker of the season, after signing MoCo native Brian Johnson off of the Chicago Bears practice squad.

In an unlikely sequence of events in Washington’s Monday Night Football victory, the Football Team saw kicker Joey Slye get his extra point blocked then suffer a hamstring injury while attempting to chase down Rasheem Green, who ended up returning it all the way to give Seattle 2 points before the half.

The PROS Plan guides the long-term, future development, and management of the park system. The draft plan is shaped by public input, which was collected through online, in-person, and mailed surveys.
