Do you know someone who has:

These small acts of kindness often go without recognition, but during these uncertain times Federal Realty wants to bring awareness to people who deserve a big thanks. Federal is seeking nominations to recognize individuals in our community whose acts of kindness have made an impact on others. Neighbors lifting each other up and being compassionate is what makes neighborhoods work. An individual can be nominated by visiting this link or scanning the QR code on the signs displayed at all Federal properties in the DMV which can be found:

Kanye West is a very successful rapper, producer, and fashion designer. He has sold over 20 million albums and has played a role in the success of many other musicians and brands.

Did you know that he spent a lot of his childhood in Takoma Park? Kanye would frequently visit his father, who lived in Takoma Park, and sometimes stayed in the area for weeks at a time.

Today’s announcement that the state is moving to Phase 3 on Friday has again taken us by surprise. Although I want to see our community open as quickly as possible, we must also proceed with care. We will continue to follow the data and science in Montgomery County, as we have done every day throughout the pandemic. We are averaging about 70 cases per day, and yesterday we had 97 cases– those numbers are concerning because they’re higher than they were a few weeks ago. Because we did not receive advance notice of the Governor’s decision, we need to review the Governor’s order to determine the best way forward. We will do this over the next few days to determine the best way to move forward for our residents and businesses while protecting the public health.

Maryland

Back in December of 2019, we shared that Metro would soon allow users to load SmartTrip funding onto their iPhones and Apple Watches. This morning, we learned that Apple users are now able to use their devices to pay for their fare on Metrorail, Metrobus, and all regional buses that accept SmartTrip cards. Users have the option to load funds from a pre-existing SmartTrip Card into their Apple Wallet or they can purchase a new digital card.

However, as reported by NBC Washington, this feature only works with newer devices– users must have an iPhone 8 or newer or an Apple Watch Series 3 or newer.

Education

“The State Board of Education will vote today on guidance for school systems to reevaluate their mode of instruction in the weeks ahead,” Governor Hogan tweeted this morning.

“It’s essential that we work together on flexible hybrid plans to safely begin getting some of our kids back into classrooms.”

Gaithersburg

“Take Me Home, Country Roads” was inspired by Clopper Road in Gaithersburg and Germantown. Though some believe the name of the song was going to be “Take Me Home, Clopper Road,” that has been confirmed to be untrue. Bill Danoff was inspired to write “Take Me Home, Country Roads” as he drove on Clopper Road in Gaithersburg (then a country road) on his way to a family reunion with his then-girlfriend Taffy Nivert, who also helped with the song (the duo was known as Fat City).

He and John Denver sang the song together the next night and recorded it the following Monday. Danoff has confirmed that Clopper Rd. was the inspiration in various interviews. Our featured photo is a shot of Clopper Road in 1945, courtesy of Steve Michaels. It looks a little different than the road that is part of Exit 10 on I-270 today.
