Upcoming Tex-Mex/Italian Restaurant By Seasoned Area Chef to Open Soon in Rockville

La Speranza is coming soon to Rockville, opening at 806 Baltimore Rd. in the location that was most recently home to Tia Ochi in the Burgundy Park shopping center that has been the longtime home of Jonathan’s Sports Pub.

While an exact opening date is not yet available, the restaurant had its alcohol license hearing with Montgomery County’s ABS last month and expects to open this month. La Speranza will feature both Tex-Mex and Italian cuisine, with a menu created by executive chef Neptali Mendoza, according to the restaurant’s website. IRS Information Technology Supervisor From Germantown Facing Federal Charges for Extortion and Attempted Witness Tampering

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland – A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Satbir Thukral, age 61, of Germantown, Maryland, for interference with commerce by extortion, and attempted witness tampering. The defendant had an initial appearance on September 29, 2023, in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ajmel A. Quereshi.

“A top criminal priority for the FBI is to investigate public corruption perpetrated against the government and American taxpayers,” said Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office. “Today’s indictment is an example of an important partnership with TIGTA and the work we do every day towards our common goal. The FBI will not relent in our mission to root out corruption and fraud within the government, and to hold those accountable who put greed above their trusted positions.”

Spirit Halloween Store Now Open in Laurel

With deals to open up shop in Germantown and Rockville falling through, and last year’s Burtonsville store not coming back, many Montgomery County residents are relying on the recently opened Rio location in Gaithersburg for their Halloween costumes and decorations. A nearby store has opened in nearby Laurel, just outside of the county, that can better-serve those who are closer to that area than Gaithersburg.

The Laurel store has taken over the former Total Wine storefront, located at 3221 Corridor Marketplace, for the Halloween season. We are told this is a larger Spirit Halloween location with more items and additional animatronics for customers to enjoy or purchase.

Fall Carnival Returns to Montgomery Mall Following Postponement

The Jolly Shows Carnival will be at Westfield Montgomery Mall (7101 Democracy Boulevard, Bethesda) from Wednesday, October 4th until Sunday, October 8th. The carnival was previously scheduled to take place from September 20th-24th, but was postponed due to inclement weather.

There will be over 30 attractions, including carnival rides, games, and food wagons. According to their website, “We are a new generation of carnival operators who strive to be more progressive and professional. We realize that we must produce a premium product for our customer’s hard earned money. We won’t forget our proud traditions, but we are committed to overcoming the stigmas which have hindered our industry for far too long.”

Two Areas in MoCo Ranked in Top 7% of ‘Best Small Cities in America’ List

With almost one third of the population saying that they’d prefer to live in a suburban area, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s Best Small Cities in America, with two areas in MoCo listed in the top 7% (and others ranking relatively high on the list, as seen below). We refer to them as areas, since not all are technically considered cities.

”To help Americans put down roots in places offering good quality of life and affordability, WalletHub compared more than 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across 45 key indicators of livability. They range from housing costs and school-system quality to restaurants per capita and the crime rate.”

B-CC Community Mourns the Loss of Teacher and Coach Kevin Palafox

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School math teacher and coach, Kevin Palafox, passed away on Saturday September 30th due to complications related to a recent medical diagnosis. The B-CC community, led by the Volleyball team he coached, is honoring him by putting together a fundraiser raising funds and awareness for leukemia and lymphoma.

The B-CC volleyball team shared the following via Instagram, In loving memory of Mr. Kevin K Palafox, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School volleyball program has decided to raise money and awareness for leukemia.

The proposed updates will help Metro provide better service, provide service adjustments more quickly, expand service, and increase the level of household income to qualify as low-income.

Retail Building in Damascus Sells For $1.14 Million; Now Looking For Additional Tenants

A 5,600 SF retail building at 26437 Ridge Rd. in Damascus has been sold to a partnership headed by Alexandria, VA-based Harmon Capital Group for $1.14 million, according to a report by Maryland Newsletters. The building is currently home to Domino’s Pizza on the front-facing side on Ridge Rd, but the restaurant only takes up approximately 1,500 SF with no plans to close. There is an additional 4,100 SF looking to be leased with entrances on the back side of the building.

Per the Capstar Commercial Realty listing, there are two spaces currently available in the building– A 2,800SF space and a 1,250 SF space that was previously home to Verizon. The retail building was built in 1987, and touts “Multiple access points off the intersection of Ridge Rd and High Corner St.” and a “Location adjacent to McDonald’s and at the primary gateway to the bustling Damascus Shopping Center which houses prominent names like Chipotle, Dollar Tree, Advance Auto Parts, T-mobile, Mathnasium, and several more.”

Shady Grove and White Oak Medical Centers Both Earn National Recognition for High Quality Stroke Care
