Howard County Sheriff’s Office Mourns the Loss of Deputy Ryan Demby

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its own after Deputy Ryan Demby was shot and killed Thursday night following an altercation at a Baltimore bar. The Sheriff’s Office released the following statement on Friday:

“The Howard County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the shocking and tragic loss of an off-duty deputy who was shot and killed in Baltimore last night. Deputy Ryan Demby was in a bar around midnight when a verbal argument broke out between other patrons. During the altercation, shots were fired and Deputy Demby was struck. The Baltimore Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Our hearts are broken for the Demby family, Ryan’s friends and colleagues, and our entire sheriff’s office family. We will continue to keep our community updated and are grateful for your support during this difficult time.”

“White Oak’s Back” White Oak Bowling Lanes Reopen Today After Two Year Closure

White Oak Duckpin Lanes at 11207 New Hampshire Ave, which opened in 1959, is officially reopening today (Saturday, September 30). The bowling alley has been closed since September 2021 due to flooding and a subsequent dispute with the building’s landlord. A video hyping the return of the MoCo institution can be seen below.

A GoFundMe created for the business in December, 2021 has raised over $27,000.  White Oak Lanes announced it would be returning back in February of this year: “As you are probably aware, White Oak Lanes experienced a really bad flooding incident back in September of 2021. This incident caused substantial damage to our lanes. Even though we are going to be sad to see the old lanes leave, we will definitely be excited to see the new lanes when they are completed! When you come back, White Oak will have new lanes, approaches, and pin decks! Hope everyone is as excited about that as we are!”

A Germantown Family is Hosting a Haunted Trail This October For Halloween

The Salgado family, known for their extravagant yearly Christmas display, is hosting a haunted walkthrough this year for Halloween at 11609 Lucrece Ter. in Germantown. The Christmas display will be returning following the Halloween display. The “Salgado’s Haunted Trail” was created by siblings Pahan and Supuli Salgado and their cousins Nimaya and Nipun (video and photos below).

They will be open Sunday, October 1 from 7:30pm-10pm and from October 6 through 15 from 7:30 to 10pm. Then they will open on October 20, 21, 22, 27, and 28, and on Halloween 31 October from 7:30pm to 10pm (all weather permitting).

Local Artist To Begin Work to Transform 300-year-old historic Linden Oak to Public Art

Montgomery Parks’ 300-year-old historic linden oak tree was loved by many. The tree was taken down in July due to declining health, however, the wood salvaged from the tree will carry on its legacy as a park bench. Local chainsaw artist Colin Vale will begin carving the wood from the tree the first week of October. Once complete, the bench will be placed at Ken-Gar Palisades Local Park.

Planning Board Approves Scope of Work for 2024 Update to Growth and Infrastructure Policy

Policy addresses adequacy of Montgomery County’s public facilities as part of the development approval process; community invited to October 17 informational meeting

The Montgomery County Planning Board approved the Scope of Work for the 2024-2028 update to the county’s Growth and Infrastructure Policy at its meeting on Thursday, September 28, 2023. The Growth and Infrastructure Policy (GIP) must be updated every four years and is the county’s most important policy for ensuring infrastructure is adequate to support growth. It is also vital to advancing the goals established in Thrive Montgomery 2050, the recently approved and adopted General Plan for Montgomery County.

Rosa Parks Middle School Sends Letter to the Community Informing of a “Live Pistol Round” Found on a Luggage Bus at the School’s Outdoor Ed. Site

A letter was sent home to the Rosa Parks Middle School community (19200 Olney Mill Rd. in Olney) on Wednesday, September 27th, informing them of a “live pistol round” that was found on a luggage bus upon arrival to the school’s outdoor education site. A weapon was not found and there were no students present or on the bus. The full letter to the community can be seen below:

New Maryland Laws Starting October 1st, 2023

Concealed Carry-Restricted Areas: “While lawmakers this year removed the “good and substantial reason” language from Maryland law that the Supreme Court found unconstitutional, Maryland is tightening gun laws to prevent someone from carrying a concealed handgun in certain areas. For example, the law will generally prohibit a person from wearing, carrying or transporting a gun in an “area for children or vulnerable adults,” like a school or health care facility.” (Per the Associated Press)

Police Prosecutions: “Maryland’s attorney general will have independent authority to bring criminal charges against police officers after investigating deaths when officers are involved. The law is an expansion on a package of police reforms approved two years ago in response to concerns about police accountability after the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minnesota.” (per WBAL)

Rockville to Host Salute to Service at Veterans Day Ceremony

Rockville will honor veterans of our nation’s armed forces with a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11. The ceremony is planned for Veterans Park, at the intersection of MD 28 and Rockville Pike. Free parking will be available at Sandy Spring Bank, 611 Rockville Pike.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will include a wreath laying and a presentation of colors. A reception will follow at American Legion Post 86, at 2013 Veirs Mill Road.
