Mrs. Estelle Moore Begins Her 50th Year Teaching in MCPS

Mrs. Estelle Moore has been teaching for a total of 53 years; three years in Pennsylvania and the last 50 in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Having taught in MCPS since 1973, she has worked at Harmony Hills Elementary School, East Silver Spring Elementary School, Piney Branch Elementary School, Broad Acres Elementary School, Brooke Grove Elementary School, and Cloverly Elementary School. She has been at Greencastle in Silver Spring for 30 years, where she currently teaches 2nd grade.

During her illustrious teaching career, she spent a year teaching in Japan and four months in Ghana. Mrs. Moore was also named MCPS Teacher of the Year over 30 years ago while teaching at Brooke Grove Elementary School in Olney. When asked what the biggest difference she has seen in her fifty years teaching in MCPS, Mrs. Moore said “The curriculum. It seems like every 3-5 years there has been a shift in the curriculum, but I feel in recent years it has come full circle in ways.” giving the example of phonemic awareness. When asked what’s still the same, she said “Students still need to know that you care. They need to hear their name in a positive way and to know that they matter.”

MCPS Statement Concerning the Court Decision Declining a Preliminary Injunction To Implement Opt Out of Inclusive Teaching Materials

Per MCPS: Today, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland issued a decision declining the plaintiff’s motion for a preliminary injunction that would have required Montgomery County Public Schools to allow families to opt out of engagement with LGBTQ+ inclusive texts during English Language Arts instruction. The judge also denied the request for an injunction pending appeal.

The ruling states, “Public schools are not obliged to shield individual students from ideas which potentially are religiously offensive, particularly when the school imposes no requirement that the student violate his or her faith during classroom instruction.” (page 46) The decision comes after plaintiffs filed a motion for preliminary injunction in June and following a hearing on August 9 before District Judge Deborah L. Boardman.

Update: DMV Iron Gym Sets Opening Date in Rockville

Update: DMV Iron Gym has set an opening date of September 15th.

In May we let you know that DMV Iron Gym, a world class facility that offers hand selected, state of the art gym equipment from the 1960’s up to the latest technology from the best manufacturers in the world, is coming to MoCo. The 16,000 square foot facility planned open in Rockville’s Federal Plaza in September 2023, next to Micro Center. La Table Du Chateau’s French Breakfast/Brunch Will No Longer Be Available at The Block in Pike & Rose

Chef Max Zelenkov and his wife Iqra Zelenkov announced the grand opening of La Table Du Chateau at The Block at Pike and Rose (967 Rose Ave. North Bethesda) last month, debuting as a weekend-only breakfast/brunch spot on Saturday, July 22. One month later the two sides have concluded their working relationship. La Table Du Chateau will continue to operate as it did before this venture, as a catering company, and will also be available at area farmers markets in Olney and Maple Lawn going forward.

Chef Max Zelenkov’s journey began when he emigrated as a Ukrainian/Russian native to the United States and was raised and pursued his education in Montgomery County. MoCo, a melting pot of culture and tradition, was the perfect setting to foster Chef Max’s fascination with the world’s diverse culinary traditions. Iqra Zelenkov tells us the duo hopes to launch their own storefront in a year or so, if finances permit them to, but for now will just expand their catering and farmers markets presence.

City of Gaithersburg Labor Day Closures and Recycling Notices

Per the City of Gaithersburg: Most City facilities & offices are closed on September 4, 2023, in observance of Labor Day, with the exception of the following:

Recycling will be collected the preceding Saturday, September 2, 2023. Bulk pick up is unavailable. Regular trash and garbage collection for City residents is handled by private contractors. Please contact your HOA or your private contractor regarding the holiday collection schedule for these materials. Note that the Mayor & City Council Regular Session will take place on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

MCPS Welcomes New Principals at 33 Schools

Nearly 162,000 students will head back to school on Monday, Aug. 28 for the start of the 2023–2024 school year. About 920 teachers and nearly 280 supporting services employees have been hired, and there are 33 new principals, principals new to their schools and acting principals who can’t wait to get to know their new students and families. Montgomery County Board of Education to Hold Business Meeting, Thursday August. 24, 2023

The Board of Education will hold its business meeting on Thursday, August. 24, 2023. Closed session will begin at 9:00 a.m. Public agenda items will begin at 1:00 p.m.  The meeting will be cablecast live on Comcast Channel 34 (HD 1071), Verizon Channel 36, RCN Channel 89 and the MCPS website.

Final Escalator Replacement Underway at Silver Spring Station

Update: Another escalator replacement was completed at Silver Spring Station earlier this week. The final escalator replacement at the station is now underway. 

History: On September 6, 2022, Metro began a major capital project replacing the five entrance escalators at Silver Spring Station. All five escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

Metro: Tenleytown-AU Station east entrance to temporarily close

Metro is accelerating the escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU Station and will replace the two east entrance escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable.  Starting Monday, August 28, 2023, the entrance on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue, closest to 40th Street, will close for approximately four months. By closing the east entrance, construction crews can work on both escalators at the same time, increasing project efficiency and reducing the overall project duration by roughly two months.

During the entrance closure, construction crews will also continue to replace the final escalator that runs from the intermediate level to the mezzanine. Metro began construction to replace four entrance escalators and three internal escalators at this station in August 2021. To date, four escalators have been replaced at the station, including the two escalators at the west entrance. All escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU will be complete when the east entrance reopens in late December. Customer Impacts:
