11 MCPS Students Honored for Completing Apprenticeship Maryland Program

Eleven graduating seniors who completed apprenticeship programs within MCPS were awarded certificates and cords during a ceremony last month. Representatives with the Maryland Department of Labor presented students with the Apprenticeship Maryland program certificates and cords for graduation. The students and the programs they completed were:

Apprenticeship Maryland is a youth apprenticeship program for students, ages 16 and up, that is designed to lead to sustainable employment and further education based on a student’s selected career.  This program was developed in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland Department of Labor (MDoL).

Sherwood Student, Connor Pugh, Recognized For Producing and Distributing Kits For Students Recently Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes

Sherwood High School rising senior Conor Pugh was recognized by county health officials and MCPS for his efforts to produce and distribute diabetes kits for students recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2020, Pugh has packaged tools, including glucose tablets, an insulin cooler, a medical ID bracelet, water bottle, pocket calculator and needle disposal container for storing used needles into a kit to help students adjust to a diabetes diagnosis. He put the kits together as part of his Eagle Scout service project.

Mykonos Signs On to Bring New Restaurant to Cabin John Village

Mykonos, a Rockville staple since the 90s, will be opening a new restaurant in Potomac’s Cabin John Village. The restaurant is listed as the tenant in the space that was occupied by Broadway Pizza until the end of 2021, and the new restaurant was confirmed by a representative at the restaurant. The opening of the new restaurant will not affect the Rockville location, which will continue to operate as it has.

Mykonos, which is more of a traditional Greek restaurant than its Rockville location, also has a sister, fast-casual restaurant, Gyroland. It’s located at 1701-B3 Rockville Pike and opened in 2017. Gyroland serves open or wrapped sandwiches with lamb, beef, pork or chicken as set menu items or customizable dishes, as well as platters, salads and sides, Greek appetizers like the tyrokafteri spicy feta dip, and more.

MCPS Has Joined National Lawsuit Against TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook/Instagram, YouTube

The Frantz Law Group has announced that the Montgomery County Public School District (MCPS) joined 500 school districts nationwide in a lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in San Francisco against Meta, TikTok, Snap, YouTube, and other social media companies. In the lawsuit the plaintiff school districts allege that these companies are knowingly causing emotional harm to children through their platforms.

Per Frantz Law Group: With over 160,550 students in 210 schools, the Montgomery County Public School District is the largest school district in the state of Maryland. The lawsuit alleges that various social media companies have caused a mental and emotional health crisis marked by higher proportions of anxiety, depression, thoughts of self-harm, body dissatisfaction, disordered eating behaviors, and low self-esteem among children and students. Many are further subjected to often harmful, exploitative and addictive content that encourages disorderly behavior, unhealthy social comparison, and cyberbullying. This litigation seeks to provide the funding and staffing resources needed to mitigate the damage that school districts are currently encountering.

Montgomery County Teenager Fatally Shot on Wednesday Afternoon; Reward of Up To $25K Offered For Information Leading to Arrest/Indictment

The Homicide Unit of Prince George’s County Police is working to arrest the suspect(s) who fatally shot a teenager and injured a second victim in the Langley Park area on Wednesday. The victim is 16-year-old Kevin Ruiz Campos of Silver Spring.

Per PGCPD: On June 14, 2023, at approximately 5:30 pm, officers responded to the 7900 block of Riggs Road for a shooting. Once on scene, they located Campos in an apartment building parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene. A second victim, an adult male, was also shot. He remains hospitalized.

Mezeh is Coming Soon to Aspen Hill

Back in February of 2019, Mezeh Mediterranean Grill closed its Wheaton Mall location and reported on its website that it will be relocating to the Aspen Hill shopping center. The would-be Aspen Hill location was later removed from the Mezeh website in 2020, but a representative from the shopping center told us the two sides still hoped to reach an agreement. Nearly three years later, it’s officially happening. Mezeh has recently started construction on the old Jerry’s Subs & Pizza space. An opening date is not yet available.

Mezeh Mediterranean Grill will also be opening a new location in the upcoming Kensington Crossing development at 10619 Connecticut Avenue (at Plyers Mill Road). The restaurant has signed on to take over a new 2,350SF space with plenty of outdoor seating. Mezeh is a fast-casual eatery with a buffet-style of offerings that include rice and salad bowls, wraps and a variety of sauces and toppings. Mezeh currently has MoCo locations in Gaithersburg and Germantown.

MoCo’s Very Own, CAVA, Makes its Debut on the New York Stock Exchange

Cava is making its debut on the New York Stock Exchange Thursday morning, with its IPO priced at $22 per share, valuing the company at $2.5 billion. The company, which was started by three Montgomery County natives with its first full-service restaurant in Rockville in 2006 (Cava Mezze in Traville Gateway), has since become the largest restaurant operator in the Mediterranean category in the U.S. restaurant industry, has opened over 200 restaurants since opening its first fast-casual spot in Bethesda in 2011.

In 2006, first-generation Greek Americans Ted Xenohristos (Paint Branch High School), Ike Grigoropoulos (Gaithersburg High School), and Dimitri Moshovitis (Quince Orchard High School) launched the full-service Cava Mezze restaurant in the Traville Gateway shopping center (Rockville), with Moshovitis as executive chef. Following the launch of four additional restaurants, in 2008, Xenohristos, Grigoropoulos, and Moshovitis launched a line of dips and spreads to over 200 stores, including Whole Foods Market. In 2009, Brett Schulman joined them as CEO and co-founder of the fast-casual chain CAVA (originally called Cava Mezze Grill, later rebranded as Cava Grill and then simply as CAVA). The group opened the first CAVA restaurant in Bethesda in January 2011.

Shady Grove Caregivers Break Ground on Hospital’s New Patient Care Tower

Building is Among First U.S. Care Spaces Designed and Built Since COVID; Tower Will Bring Upgrades to Busy Emergency Department, Critical Care Units: Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center broke ground on its new, six-story patient care tower during last month (featured photo shows construction from June 15th). The tower, adjacent to the existing hospital, will bring residents of middle and upper Montgomery County upgraded and modernized Emergency Department; a larger state-of-the art intensive care unit; new medical-surgical patient rooms; and several other features.

The groundbreaking coincided with both National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. Accordingly, the hospital selected 10 caregivers to join Shady Grove’s president, Dan Cochran, and Adventist HealthCare President and CEO Terry Forde for the dirt turning ceremony. The group used shovels with blades decorated by caregivers, representing units connected to services in the new tower.

MCPS School Counseling Policy Open for Comment Through Sept. 4

Fire Controlled By Sprinkler System in Pike & Rose Apartment Building Wednesday Night; Several Residents Displaced

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) were called to the scene of an apartment fire shortly after 11pm at The Henri apartment building, located at 11800 Grand Park Ave., off of Old Georgetown Rd., in Pike & Rose on Wednesday night.

The fire was reported on the 9th floor of the 16-story apartment and activated the sprinkler system. The cause was a grease fire in the kitchen, but the building’s sprinkler system was able to control the fire until firefighters arrived. There were no injuries reported, but some water damage on lower floors due to the sprinkler activation. Two of the three elevators in the building were out of service as of early Thursday morning due to water damage and several residents have been displaced.

MDOT Transportation Secretary Charts Course Toward Goal of Zero Highway Deaths

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld on Tuesday reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the goal of Vision Zero – elimination of all traffic fatalities and severe injuries on Maryland roadways – and announced bold steps for the Maryland Department of Transportation to achieve that objective by 2030.

Speaking at this year’s Washington Area Bicyclist Association’s Vision Zero Summit, Secretary Wiedefeld noted that 563 people died on Maryland roadways last year – including 135 pedestrians and 11 bicyclists – and the state has already seen 238 highway fatalities this year. He said the Moore-Miller Administration is committed to action, collaboration, education and enforcement to deliver the goal of zero roadway deaths while increasing safe, convenient and equitable mobility.
