Scotland Community Juneteenth Heritage Festival Announced

Celebration at Cabin John to Benefit the Scotland AME Zion Church Restoration

Celebrating the past and present of the first places African-Americans owned land in Montgomery County, the Scotland community of Potomac, Md., is announcing a significant expansion of its annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival for 2023. Featuring a children’s carnival and music performance, as well as art exhibitions, food, sports, and presentations on Black history in this region, the events for the federal holiday on Monday, June 19, will be spread across the Cabin John Regional Park, Cabin John Village, and the Scotland community on Seven Locks Road.

Wood Middle School Principal Sends Community Letter Regarding Presentation Titled “Homophobic Club Hub” Found on Student Chromebook

Earle B. Wood Middle School principal Heidi Slatcoff sent out a community letter on Friday information families of an investigation following a teacher’s discovery of a presentation titled “Homophobic Club Hub” on a student Chromebook. The investigation found the the student shared the documents with at least two other students prior to deleting them. There was no evidence of any other students participating in generating the documents, and no evidence that a club was actually formed. According to the investigation, the documents were generated 2 – 4 months ago. The full letter can be seen below:

This is clearly a hate/bias incident and I must say that discrimination in any form cannot be tolerated. It impedes MCPS’ and our school’s ability to discharge its responsibilities to all students and staff, and achieve our community’s long-standing efforts to create, foster, and promote equity, inclusion, and acceptance for all. While students who commit this unacceptable act will receive consequences as per MCPS Student Code of Conduct, it is important that we continue our work with our students to help them understand the impact of hateful and hurtful words.

9-Year-Old Prince George’s County Native Keivonn Woodard Stars in HBO’s The Last of Us

9-Year-Old Keivonn Woodard is cast as Sam in HBO’s The Last of Us, a show based on the popular video game that has become one of HBO Max’s most watched series. This is the first acting job for Keivonn, who is a Bowie native– a city located in neighboring Prince George’s County.

Woodard is part of a six-generation deaf family, many of whom are actors. He also plays hockey locally for the Bowie Hockey Club 10U Team. The photo seen below, courtesy of the Bowie Hockey Club, shows the team after becoming the 2022 Ice Works St. Patrick’s Day Tournament Champions.

Wheaton High School Principal Appeals Decision to Cancel Wrestling Team’s Season

On February 2, 2023, Wheaton High School principal Joshua Munsey sent a letter to the WHS community informing them of a violation of Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) athletic rules and regulations by the Wheaton wrestling program.

In the letter, it was explained that there was an allegation of an ineligible student-athlete competing for Wheaton High School. The wrestling program was paused on January 27th and a comprehensive investigation confirmed the allegation. This led to the cancellation of the remaining part of the season for the entire Wheaton wrestling program, per regulations outlined in the MPSSAA handbook. According to NBC4, the head coach of the wrestling team knowingly broke the rules “but thought the consequences would come down on him and not the varsity, junior varsity and girls teams.” He is no longer employed by MCPS.

Open Parkways Schedule: The Open Parkways will be extended during the Presidents Day holiday weekend. During this time, parkways are open to pedestrians and bicyclists and closed to motor vehicles.

Roaming Rooster to Celebrate Grand Opening of its Gaithersburg Location with Ribbon Cutting, Balloon Arch, and Photo Booth on Feb. 15

The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) will be hosting a ribbon cutting for Roaming Rooster to celebrate its newest location in Gaithersburg. Roaming Rooster is a Black-owned business that started as food truck in 2015 and opening its first brick-and-mortar in 2018. Roaming Rooster won the 39th Annual RAMMY Award for the “Hottest Sandwich Shop” from the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington. The GGCC encourages guests to stay for lunch after the ribbon cutting and support its newest member.

Maryland Is 2023’s “2nd Most Educated State in America” According to Study

The state of Maryland has been ranked second in a list of “Most Educated States.” With BLS data showing a correlation between higher education levels, higher income and lower unemployment rates, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s Most & Least Educated States in America. Massachusetts was ranked first and Connecticut came in third.

In order to determine the most educated states, WalletHub compared all 50 states across 18 metrics that examined the key factors of a well-educated population: educational attainment, school quality and achievement gaps between genders and races.

Last week we let you know that Dan Snyder was putting his Montgomery County home up for sale, for what would be a DMV record breaking $49 million if it sold for the asking price. Now, the home listing is available to browse on any real estate website. It is being listed by listed by Heather Corey and Michael Rankin of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty.

The home, located at 11900 River Rd., has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms spread across 30,000 SF. The French-style single family home sits on a lot size of just over 9.6 acres and is located in Potomac. It comes at a price of $1,633 per square foot, with an annual tax $192,631 (over $75k more than the $117,345 median household income in Montgomery County).

Whitman Alumna Abby Meyers Honored by Maryland Basketball on Senior Day

Abby Meyers is Whitman High School’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,700 points and was the Ivy League Player of the Year last year before transferring to the University of Maryland for her senior season. Yesterday she was honored at  Senior Day as #8 Maryland took on Illinois.

Meyers didn’t disappoint, scoring 14 of her 18 points in the third quarter for the Terps, helping lead the team to an 81-72 victory and improving to 13-0 all-time against Illinois. In an interview with the Diamondback last month, she credited her  junior and senior years at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda as helping her evolve as a teammate and leader, playing a big role in being named a captain ahead of her first season at Maryland.

Another Warm February Week Ahead

After a couple colder days, temperatures are expected to push 60° again to start the week off on Monday. A chilly morning start will lead to temps hitting 50° by about noon and reaching the upper 50s an hour or two after that, with partly sunny skies.

A similar day is expected on Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 50s. The week will end with three days (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) of temperatures on the mid to upper 60s, which is not common for mid-February. The three days of spring-like weather will come with variable cloudiness and a chance of rain on all three days, with Thursday being the most likely.
