Rahne Jones, Host of MTV’s ‘Help! I’m in a Secret Relationship!’ is a MoCo Native

Rahne Jones is an actress that made her television debut as Skye on Netflix’s The Politician in 2019. She is currently a co-host on the new MTV reality show, Help! I’m in a Secret Relationship!, which aired its first episode in April 2022. Rahne is a MoCo native, from Silver Spring, and graduated from Paint Branch High School in 2005.

She was named after her father, Ronnie. After graduating from Paint Branch High School in 2005, Jones attended college at Radford University on a full basketball scholarship for her freshman year. She eventually transferred to University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) where she got her bachelor’s degree in English. After college, she worked as an inspector for the US Department of Homeland Security for 4 years before moving to NYC and pursuing theater. Jones currently lives in NYC with her wife, Bridget.

Students Win Scholarships from Volunteer Organization, The Links

MCPS Student-Athletes Create PSA on Being Respectful and Encouraging

Student-athletes from throughout MCPS high schools participated in a Student-Athlete Leadership Council Meeting at Carver Educational Services Center on Sept. 13. The meeting discussed a variety of topics, including strong leadership and enhancing participation in MCPS athletics. In addition, students on the council recently produced this PSA, a message about being respectful, encouraging and supportive at all athletic events. The video can be seen below:

Kennedy High School Music Teacher, Amanda Herold, Earns Professional Achievement Award

Amanda Herold, instrumental music teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, was given the Professional Achievement Award by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

This award recognizes her outstanding dedication and commitment to the field of music education during her time as an undergraduate at Gettysburg College. Herold was an active member of NAfME and helped lead music education initiatives across campus. She was statewide president for the Pennsylvania Collegiate Music Educators Association and was invited to speak at the NAfME Collegiate Advocacy Summit on the topic of advocacy in collegiate music education chapters in 2021.

Man Charged After Allegedly Pointing Firearm With Red Laser at Other Motorists on I-495 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway

Defendant Allegedly Threatened Victims with a Gun as They Drove on I-495 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland: A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Lavar William Henderson, age 44, of Richmond, Virginia, for the federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The indictment was returned on November 16, 2022. Henderson was arrested on related state charges on November 16, 2022, and had an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt yesterday on the federal indictment. Henderson consented to detention pending trial.

WSSC Water Reports 48 Leaks and Breaks on Christmas Eve

WSSC Water has reported that there have been 48 breaks and leaks in Montgomery and Prince George’s County on Christmas Eve as of 8:40pm. Crews are “moving from one job to the next as quickly as possible” and additional contractors are also out repairing breaks, according to WSSC.

Several Injured in Saturday Morning Crash

Several people were evaluated for trauma injuries following a single vehicle crash at approximately 4:30am on Saturday morning, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS).

Per Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, one person was ejected from the vehicle, several suffered trauma injuries, and at least one person’s injuries are life-threatening. There were icy road conditions at the time of the crash with temperatures at approximately 6° when emergency units arrived on the scene.

Beyond MoCo: Georgetown University Hires Adnan Syed To Work on Prison Reform

Per Georgetown University: On Dec. 12, Syed began work as a program associate for the Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI), a Georgetown organization that addresses the root causes and consequences of mass incarceration and offers educational programs and training for incarcerated individuals and returning citizens. In his new role, Syed supports PJI programming, including Georgetown’s Making an Exoneree class, in which students reinvestigate decades-old wrongful convictions, create short documentaries about the cases and work to help bring innocent people home from prison.

Syed’s own story was reinvestigated and brought to the attention of millions of listeners after Serial, a podcast from the creators of This American Life, uncovered new details in his case in 2014. Syed had been arrested and wrongfully convicted of the murder of his high school classmate, Hae Min Lee, in 1999. This fall, a judge vacated his life sentence and a month later, prosecutors announced they were dismissing charges against Syed based on newly tested DNA evidence that excluded him. Syed was represented by Erica Suter (L’03), who directs the University of Baltimore’s Innocence Project Clinic, and he was later added to the National Registry of Exonerations.

Maryland Man Cited For Concealing Two Axes On Carry-On Bag

A Maryland man was cited by police after attempting to bring two axes in his carry-on bag at Ronald Reagan National airport, according to TSA Spokesperson Lisa Farbstein.

Per Farbstein, the two axes were concealed in the lining of his carry-on bag at Reagan National airport. The man stated he was going to an axe-throwing tournament, as the reason the axes were found in his bag. Each axe had its name on the ha handle– one labeled “death” and the other labeled “twin.”

Holiday Message From MCPS Superintendent, Dr. Monifa McKnight

As we enter a much-deserved Winter Break, I want to wish all of you, our amazing students, superb staff and wonderful families — a joyous holiday season. With the first semester winding down, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for all that each and every one of you do for our students and for one another.

Reflecting on this first half of the school year, I am so proud of what we have accomplished as a community, with our “All Together Now” spirit. We are staying true to our mission, so that all of our students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. I remain hopeful that we can and will continue the work we have embarked on this school year, build on the momentum we cultivated, and address the challenges before us.
