Germantown

Many of residents and commercial buildings are without power in the Germantown area. According to the statewide power outage map, 4,180 people in Montgomery County are without power, with most presumed to be in the Germantown area. The “Estimated Restoration Time” is 11pm, but the time provided is always the most conservative for the outages that are grouped at this zoom level.

We have been told that many retailers have closed due to the outage, but we don’t have any definitive  information on why the outages have occurred. Currently, zip codes 20876, 20874, and 20841 have the highest amount of power outages in the county.

Back in January we let you know that the Dunkin Donuts that’s currently located in the recently renovated Rock Grove Center on the corner of 355 and Shady Grove will be relocating. Employees have let us know that the move will officially take place at 4:30am on Monday, July 25. At that time the old location will close and the new location on the back side of the shopping center (the old United Bank location at 16268 Frederick Rd) will open.

The bank had a drive-thru, which will be used by Dunkin’. Baskin Robbins has also been added to this location, so customers can get their frozen treats on the go. The shopping center is currently home to Minerva, the newly opened Qdoba, and more, with a few retail locations still available to lease.

Takoma Park

Takoma Park has moved closer to the Caribbean with a new coral reef, which has grown inside a bus shelter at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Hilltop Road. The City of Takoma Park’s Arts and Humanities Division organized the project to share public art in unusual locations and encourage public transportation. “We wanted to create a fun design that would brighten people’s day while they’re walking by or waiting for the bus,” Arts and Humanities Coordinator Brendan Smith said. “Art should be shared with people where they live and not be be confined to art museums or galleries.”

Arts and Humanities Intern Paula Barrios designed the wrap which is a permanent installation. A second coral reef wrap will be installed at a later date on a bus shelter outside the ALDI shopping center on New Hampshire Avenue. Grab a face mask and snorkel and check it out! Take some photos at the shelter and share them on the City of Takoma Park’s Twitter and Instagram pages. Vinyl wraps promoting the Takoma Park Arts performance series also have been installed on three new bus shelters. Germantown

Back in December we let you know that Pizza Hut is moving into the Cloppers Mill shopping center in Germantown. It will be located at 18070 Mateny Rd, between Shoppers and Popeyes. After more than 6 months, construction has started at the restaurant. The location is smaller, so it will likely be similar to the upcoming Pizza Hut location that is taking over part of the former GameStop location in Four Corners, which is also a smaller store.

Last September, David Gibbs (CEO of Pizza Hut parent company Yum Brands), told investors, “We closed a lot of the dine-in stores that didn’t belong on the portfolio over the last 18 months in the United States,” according to a transcript on the financial services site Sentieo. “But for the most part, the stores we have in the portfolio now are good, long-term stores.”
