MCPS

Per MCPS: Vaccination for COVID-19 is strongly recommended for student-athletes, but is no longer required. This change to the vaccination requirement applies to summer conditioning and the upcoming fall season.

The change is due to community transmission levels, vaccination rates and analysis of activities (mostly outdoors). Vaccination requirements are subject to change, pending the latest guidance from the Student-Athlete Medical Advisory Committee for MCPS Athletics, in collaboration with DHHS.

MCPS

MCPS is partnering with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to begin vaccinating children ages 6 months to 5 years old on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26, by appointment only.

Parents are encouraged to check with their pediatrician for vaccine availability as the majority of vaccine received in Montgomery County has been delivered to the private sector (physicians and pharmacies). County-operated clinics will offer one type of vaccine at each clinic.

Beyond MoCo

McLean Police District – Noah Settles, 22, of Washington, D.C. turned himself in last night at the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax. He was held without bond. Settles was wanted in connection to the June 18 shooting that occurred at Tysons Corner Center in McLean.

Per Fairfax County Police: Officers were called just before 3 p.m. for reports of shots fired inside the mall. When officers arrived, witnesses directed them to the second level where a fight broke out that led to a brandishing. The groups dispersed and re-engaged a short time later. This led to three rounds being discharged. Officers quickly began clearing the mall to protect against any threat and to assist those who had sheltered in place. Fortunately, no individuals were struck by the gunfire; however, three community members received medical attention for injuries sustained while fleeing the shopping center.

Downtown Silver Spring

Back in September 2021 we let you know that Kusshi, a popular sushi restaurant in Pike & Rose, would be opening a new location called Kusshi.ko in Downtown Silver Spring, taking over the location that was formerly occupied by Gusto in Downtown Silver Spring (8512 Fenton Street).

We have been told that the restaurant will be dropping the “ko” from its name due to approval issues with the signage and will now be going by the Kusshi name going forward. The restaurant will have a similar, but slightly more limited, menu as Kusshi in Pike & Rose. We are told it will definitely have all of the sushi items.

Gaithersburg

At approximately 5:45PM Thursday evening, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) and Montgomery County Police responded to a crash involving a minivan that rolled onto its side on Washingtonian Blvd (Rio) near the Target parking.

Everybody was able to self-extricate (got out on their own prior to responders arriving) from the crash. Police requested a tow to clear the minivan that was still resting on its side.

MoCo Police

On December 29, 2021, there was a police-involved shooting in the area of Wayne Avenue and Dartmouth Avenue in Silver Spring. Four officers with the Montgomery County Police Department discharged their service weapons at Sesay, who was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers involved were Officer Karli Dorsey, Officer Eric Kessler, Officer Nathan Lenhart, and Officer Dennis Tejada.

The complete report released by the Attorney General’s Office following its investigation, which took place over the last several months, can be accessed below. The report was written by the Office of the Attorney General Independent Investigations Division and any redactions were made by the Office of the Attorney General in preparation for public release. Pursuant to an agreement between the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office, based upon a thorough review of the report it is the opinion of the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office that the actions of the shooting officers on December 29, 2021, were reasonable under the circumstances. Accordingly, the Office of the State’s Attorney for Howard County declines to file charges against the involved officers.

Germantown

Zoe’s Kitchen, located at 19865 Century Blvd in Germantown , will be closing permanently on Wednesday, July 6th, according to a representative from the Germantown location. We are told it will be reopening after approximately 3 months as a CAVA catering hub. CAVA, the fast-casual restaurant that started in MoCo, acquired Zoe’s and its 200+ restaurants in 2018 for approximately $300 million.

Serving a Mediterranean inspired menu with different varieties of salads, pitas and sandwiches; Zoe’s, by 2014 grew, to include over 200 locations across 17 states with plans to expand further. However, the acquisition by CAVA has resulted in a dramatic reduction in Zoe’s locations (some replaced by CAVA restaurants). As of June 22, 2022 there were 90 locations remaining in 15 states, with previous Montgomery County locations in Park Potomac and Gaithersburg closing in recent years.

MCFRS

The incident at 11215 Georgia Ave in Wheaton “is over and occupants are re-occupying their apartments. Fire/Rescue units are picking up and going in service. Roads in the area are being re-opened”, according to Battalion Chief Jason Blake of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS).

At approximately 6:30 Thursday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were dispatched to the 11200 block of Georgia Ave in Wheaton.  Originally dispatched for a fire alarm, crews arrived at the Arrive Wheaton apartments and along with the bomb squad and police department, began to investigate the claim of an explosive in the building.
