The national baby formula shortage has greatly impacted families in communities across the country, so the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Maryland sought to create an outlet for families to crowdsource formula sightings and also do inventory checks in real time. Delegate Lesley Lopez reached out to Adam Lederer (Clarksburg High School Class of 2022) and Matthew Nanas (Wheaton High School Class of 2022), the young men who created MoCoVax.com last year to help residents who were struggling to find appointments for the Covid-19 vaccine.

DMV Formula was made at the request of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Maryland.  Delegate Lopez reached out to Adam Lederer to see if he and Matthew would be interested in programming a website to help local parents find baby formula across the DMV. The website uses crowdsourcing information, allowing users to upload pictures of baby formula in-store locations. DMV Formula also has an inventory checker for Target, Buy Buy Baby, and Bed Bath and Beyond.

A time capsule was buried in 2002 by students at Spark M. Matsunaga and Longview School and was opened at an event at the school that was broadcasted live on YouTube on Friday. Some of the items included were a “Tycoon Roller Coaster” computer game, Girl Scout cookies (Samoas), a SpongeBob toy, a Maryland Basketball  National Championship flag (the team won it all in 2002), a box of 2002 Upper Deck baseball cards, a few issues of The Gazette, a roadmap of Montgomery County, a box of Honey Nut Cheerios, a Birdseye view photo of the school taken from a plane, a disposable camera, and a lot more (full video available below).

To commemorate the co-location of these schools, students raised $2,100  in 2002 for a time capsule that has been displayed at the school’s Media Center. In addition, students and their families have contributed written works and letters that will be included in the capsule. The capsule will be opened in twenty years when its count-down clock reaches zero, which will be at 10am today.

Back in February, Shake Shack fenced off the site of its upcoming Kentlands location, next to Starbucks, as it prepared to break ground for its third location in Montgomery County. The fencing came down and then back up before breaking ground a few weeks back. Below you’ll see the ground as crews prepare to begin construction.

Construction is expected to begin soon and could be complete by the end of the year. Shake Shack currently has locations in Cabin John Village (Potomac) and A couple miles away at Montgomery Mall (Bethesda).

I-495

A tractor trailer rolled over following a collision between Connecticut Avenue and 355 on the outer loop of I-495 at approximately 6:45am Saturday morning, according to Montgomery Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) PIO Pete Piringer. One adult was being evaluated for non life-threatening injuries.

Though the cargo was non-hazardous, a HazMat crew was on the scene to help with the pumping off the remaining fuel and to deal with other fluid spillage. The two right lanes of the outer loop of 495 were closed for an extended period of time on Saturday morning.

Crime

Two 19-year-olds, Christian Santos and Christian Feliz-Mendez, were arrested and charged with Montgomery County, stemming from an incident that occurred at an apartment complex on the 5900 block of Montrose Rd. in Rockville, according to FOX 5. Santos, one of the two teenagers, has been identified as a cadet for the Metropolitan Police Department, but has since been terminated.

According to police, the two men arranged to meet with someone from Facebook who was selling a pair of Jordan 12 sneakers. The victim told investigators that shortly after arriving at the apartment complex, one of the two suspects pulled a gun and took the shoes. The victim reported that the suspect deactivated his Facebook account after the incident, but the account was later reactivated. It was then traced back to Christian Santos, who was also placed in the area by cell phone records.

Restaurants

Mr. Kai, a large stuffed bear, has been Sweeteria’s unofficial mascot since the dessert shop opened its doors back in the fall of 2020. The Thai dessert shop, owned and operated by the owners of Kao Thai Restaurant (two stores down), recently posted a sad story that included a video of their beloved mascot being taken off a chair by a man on a bike. The stuffed bear is posed in various locations around the restaurant and a few days ago, he was placed on a chair behind the restaurant that the employees often use to sit on.

After a brief search, Mr. Kai was returned and it turns out the whole situation was a misunderstanding. The outdoor chairs behind the dessert shop are located in close proximity to a dumpster, so the man who was riding by on his bike thought that the large stuffed animal was being thrown away. Once he was informed that Mr. Kai was being looked for, he quickly returned the bear to the restaurant.
