NYC-Based Bakery and Cafe, maman, to Open Next Week in Bethesda

Back in March we let you know that NYC’s beloved French Bakery & Café, maman, would be expanding into the Washington, DC region with three new locations opening this year. Its first location will be in Bethesda Row at 7140 Bethesda Ln , replacing Le Pain Quotidien, and now we know that it will be opening on Monday, June 6th.

The Provençal-inspired café, created by co-founders Elisa Marshall and Benjamin Sormonte, will bring its fan-favorite salads, sandwiches, and Nutty Chocolate Chip Cookies, made famous by Oprah, to the Bethesda Row neighborhood later this spring/summer. In true maman fashion, the decor will boast florals and feature vintage windows and antique furniture, inspired by the South of France.

Silver Spring Downtown and Adjacent Communities Plan Approved

Plan recommends development of key opportunity sites, new parks, improvements to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and vision for sustainable economic growth in downtown 

Per Montgomery Planning: The resolution of adoption of the Silver Spring Downtown and Adjacent Communities Plan was approved unanimously by the Montgomery County Planning Board on June 2. This follows the Montgomery County Council’s approval of the plan on May 26. The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), began work on the plan in 2020, and the Planning Board Draft Plan was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board and transmitted to the County Council in January 2022.

D.C. Ranks 15th in a 2022 List of ‘Best Cities for Hockey Fans’

With the 2022 Stanley Cup semifinals in full gear and the NHL projected to have a record over $5 billion in revenue this season, the personal-finance website WalletHub released its report on 2022’s Best Cities for Hockey Fans. Washington D.C. came in at #15 out of 72 cities included on the list.

The Washington Capitals have made the Capitals for 8 years straight and 14 of the last 15 years, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018. Their consistently strong teams have helped D.C. reach 15th on the NHL side, while the city is ranked 55th on the NCAA side.

Two MCPS Student-Athletes win ‘Minds in Motion’ Athletic Scholarships

The Maryland Public Schools Sports Athletic Association (MPSSAA) conducts an annual Minds In Motion Scholar-Athlete Scholarship program that recognizes those who have excelled on the playing field and in the classroom. Two MCPS, Zam Nwosu of Clarksburg High School and Leo Kugel of Einstein High School, were selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship and were awarded inside the Baltimore Ravens locker room. Live Opening of Time Capsule at Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary School in Germantown This Morning

A time capsule was buried in 2002 by students at Spark M. Matsunaga and Longview School and will be opened at an event at the school that will be broadcasted live on YouTube at 10am today (Friday, June 3rd). Matsunaga Elementary and Longview School, is named in honor of Senator Spark Masayuki Matsunaga from Hawaii. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1962, and later served in the Senate from 1977-1990. Matsunaga Elementary is the first school in Montgomery County named after an Asian-American. The school is also the first co-located school in Montgomery County and represents an end of separating students with special needs from their peers.

To commemorate the co-location of these schools, students raised $2,100  in 2002 for a time capsule that has been displayed at the school’s Media Center. In addition, students and their families have contributed written works and letters that will be included in the capsule. The capsule will be opened in twenty years when its count-down clock reaches zero, which will be at 10am today.

Silver Spring Blues Week Begins on June 8th

Silver Spring Blues Week will return as a mostly in-person, 10-day event from Wednesday, June 8, through Saturday, June 18, concluding with a star-filled lineup for the 13th Silver Spring Blues Festival on June 18. The event is presented by Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. The festival was not held in person for the past two years due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

The Daryl Davis Band will headline an array of other blues artists at the June 18 festival. The lineup will include Patty Reese, Matt Kelly, Sol Roots, the Archie Edward’s Blues Heritage Ensemble. For the Blues Festival, attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Rockville to Host Virtual and In-Person Pride Events This Month

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trangender, Queer/Questioning Plus (LGBTQ+) Pride Month is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. The commemorative month also recognizes the impact LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history—locally, nationally, and internationally. The City of Rockville has issued proclamations declaring LGBTQ+ Pride Month since June 2017.

Rockville celebrates Pride Month in June. This year, the City of Rockville’s Human Rights Commission will celebrate the sixth annual Rockville Pride with a virtual event on Sunday, June 5, 2022 and a celebration in Rockville Town Square Park from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2022. Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Effect Until 9pm

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for our area until 9:00pm. Temperatures are currently in the upper 80s and feel like they’re in the upper 90s. Clouds have already rolled in for most of the county and thunderstorms appear to be on their way.

Thunderstorms are possible for the rest of the day, with severe thunderstorms also possible– bringing hail and damaging winds. Things should clear up overnight and into tomorrow morning as Friday is expected to mostly sunny with temperatures reaching around 80°.
