Gaithersburg

Permanent signage is up at Le Macaron at 7 Grand Corner Ave (next to BurgerFi) in Gaithersburg’s Rio. The shop is expected to open in the coming months, and is owned by MoCo residents Natalia Mejia and Camilo Beltran. Le Macaron, a Florida-based pastry shop now has more than 70 locations across the US, with more locations on the way as franchisees are opening in shopping centers like Rio, food trucks, and kiosks in malls.

Menu items at the upcoming Rio location will include macarons (available in 20 flavors), gourmet chocolates, French gelato, specialty European style coffees, classic French pastries, and homemade candies.  More on the history Le Macaron, per its website:


Arts

CatVideoFest 2023, a compilation of the latest and greatest cat videos that have been edited by award-winning, Seattle-based filmmaker Will Braden, is showing this Saturday and Sunday only at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center (8633 Colesville Road) in Silver Spring. According to its website, “CatVideoFest is a joyous communal experience, only available in theaters. Enjoy 70+ minutes of nonstop cuteness, bond with your fellow feline fanatics and learn more about how to help cats in need in DC and beyond.”

Beyond MoCo

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today announced that Early Charm – a company that creates, owns, and operates ventures that convert science to revenue – has officially opened its new production shop in Baltimore City, where it plans to create 115 new jobs over the next four years. The company has leased more than 26,000 square feet of space at 1300 Bayard Street in Pigtown, where it is growing its custom manufacturing operations for advanced materials and supporting the addition of 30 new ventures.

“We are excited to support Early Charm’s reinvestment in Baltimore City, where more than a hundred jobs will soon be added to the Pigtown community,” said Gov. Moore. “Investing in this new facility will allow Early Charm to continue growing its portfolio, boost manufacturing in local industry and make Maryland even more competitive.”


MCDOT

Per MCDOT: On Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual public meeting to discuss the replacement of the Schaeffer Road Bridge (No. M-0137) over Little Seneca Creek in Poolesville. At the virtual public information meeting MCDOT will present the project details, costs, schedules and obtain public comments and answer questions. The bridge inspection revealed that the structure is in poor condition, considered structurally deficient and needs replacement. The completed project will enhance safety for motorists and bicyclists as they travel to nearby schools and facilities.

Online registration is required to attend. On the morning of the meeting, an email with a Zoom link will be sent to registrants.  Prior to the virtual meeting, the public is encouraged to review the project files on the project website.


Clarksburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fatal collision involving a single motorcycle on Thursday, August 10.  According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collision occurred on NB I270 between Route 27 and Route 121, on the ramp to Exit 18, around 7:30pm.

According to police, via FOX 5’s Allison Papson (@AllisonPapson) on Twitter, “Shortly after 7:30 p.m. this evening, troopers from the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack responded to northbound I-270 to MD 121 for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a single motorcycle. Preliminary investigation reveals a Motorcycle was traveling on the ramp from N/B I-270 when for unknown reasons, traveled off the roadway and struck a guardrail. The operator and sole occupant on the Motorcycle, who has not been identified, was pronounced deceased on the scene by emergency medical services personnel. All lanes have since reopened. Maryland tax free week will take place from Sunday, August 13th until Saturday, August 19th this year. Below we have everything you need to know about how Tax-Free Week works in Maryland:

Facts About Tax-Free Week: From 12:01 a.m. on the second Sunday in August through midnight on the following Saturday, qualifying clothing and footwear priced $100 or less will be exempt from Maryland’s six percent sales tax. The first $40 of back/bookbag sales also qualify. A list of exempt and taxable items is available on the Comptroller’s Website at www.marylandtaxes.gov, or by calling the Taxpayer Service Section at 410-260-7980 in Central Maryland or toll-free 1-800-MD TAXES from elsewhere.


Gaithersburg

The Special Victims Investigations Division is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Timia Scott, a missing 13-year-old from Gaithersburg. Scott was last seen on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at approximately 11:35 a.m., in the area of Treworthy Rd. in Gaithersburg. She is 5’4″, 120 Ibs., with black hair, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a pink and black hoodie with white letters, bike shorts and black and yellow Jordan sneakers

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Timia Scott is asked to call Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).


Crime

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – have charged 33-year-old John Reynolds of an unknown address, with the bank robbery of the TD Bank that occurred on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in the 800 block of West Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 2:23 p.m., Montgomery County Police and Gaithersburg Police officers responded to the location for the report of a bank robbery.  The investigation has revealed that Reynolds entered the bank, approached an employee who was working behind the counter and demanded money. Reynolds then jumped over the counter, removed an undisclosed amount of money from a drawer and placed it inside of a bag. Reynolds left the bank in a silver Hyundai.


Entertainment

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair returns this Friday, August 11th and will run through Saturday, August 19th. This will be the 74th annual fair and it’s third year back after having to cancel for the first time in its 70+ year history in 2020 due to Covid restrictions. Discount days at the fair include “Family Days” on Monday, Aug. 14, and Wednesday, Aug. 16, with $25 all-day rides, “Senior Day” on Tuesday, Aug. 15, that includes free admission to seniors 62+ until 5pm, and “Military Day” on Thursday, Aug. 17, which allows for free admission for active military in uniform or with a valid military ID through 5pm.

Make sure to join us opening night for the Fifth Annual Fair Foodie Awards, which will take place at 6pm at the seating tent across from the souvenir booth. Guest judges will include Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones and MoCoShow founder “Mr. MoCo” Alex Tsironis.  Last year’s Foodie winners included Cajun Chicken on a Stick and Cotton Candy Lemonade.


MCFRS

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 2200blk of McAuliffe Dr., near Meadow Hall Drive, in Rockville (near Twinbrook Library), around 7:45am on Thursday, August 10 after a car struck a utility pole and then crashed into a home. According to Rockville Police, “Driver is a 67-year old male, he is not the homeowner. A case of operator error, driver transported with minor injuries, cited for various traffic offenses. Housing inspectors are currently on scene.”

Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer tweeted that the occupied vehicle was in contact with ‘live’ powerlines. We will post an update if additional information becomes available.

Per the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, “Fire department activity blocks 4 lanes of SB I-270 just prior to Exit 1/Democracy Blvd. Only the right lane gets by.
