Bethesda

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire on Lynbrook Dr in Bethesda on Friday, April 21, around 6am. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, a neighbor across the street called 9-1-1 after seeing a fire on the porch of the two-story brick house. The lone occupant of the home was alerted by smoke alarm and self evacuated. Approximately 45 MCFRS firefighters responded to the scene and there were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Piringer reports there was “extensive clutter throughout house” and that the fire likely started on the porch. We will post an update if additional information becomes available.

MoCo Police

Montgomery County Police are asking the public’s assistances in identifying a non-verbal man that walked into a hospital on April 20.  Per MCPD: “Montgomery County Department of Police is asking for assistance in identifying and locating guardians or family members for a male that walked into a Montgomery County hospital Thursday, April 20 at approximately 8:30 p.m. He is approximately 5-feet 8-inches to 5-feet 9-inches tall, with short black hair and all black clothing. He is non-verbal.

Education

All secondary students were eligible to vote in the SMOB election and 55,598 students cast ballots. Mr. Saeed received 70 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Mr. Yoseph Zerihun, a junior at Springbrook High School, received 30 percent. The SMOB election was held on April 19 through an electronic ballot that all students received in their MCPS email; students were encouraged to vote during a class lesson.

The celebration will also recognize the MCPS Rising Star Teacher of the Year, the Dr. Edward Shirley Award for Excellence in Educational Administration and Supervision winner, the Supporting Services Employee of the Year, the Community Champion for Children, and the inaugural R.A.I.S.E. Champion of the Year.


Colesville

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 15-year-old from the Colesville area of Silver Spring.

Jennifer Orellana was last seen on Friday, April 14, 2023, at approximately 10:00 a.m., in the 1600 block of Northcrest Drive.  Jennifer Orellana is approximately 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. Jennifer has brown eyes and shoulder length hair which is dyed red. Jennifer was last seen wearing a black shirt, a black sweater, checker pants with purple lines and white/purple sneakers. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.


MDLottery

“I handed it to my uncle,” the Montgomery County resident said, “and he had the (Lottery) app on his phone and scanned it.” The low-key winner said his family — including his uncle — were happy about his Lottery luck. The construction worker plans to spend some of the prize on a vacation cruise or trip.

The $5 Extreme Green game has one $50,000 top prize remaining unclaimed and thousands of other prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000. The lucky Lottery retailer that sold the scratch-off can also celebrate. The Montgomery County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.


Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 16-year-old from Silver Spring.

Heyli Salas was last seen on Friday, April 14, 2023, in the 3400 block of Kayson Street in Silver Spring.  Heyli is 5-feet tall, 3-inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.  Police and family are concerned for her welfare.


Beyond MoCo

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have charged 19-year-old Mateo Paredes-Vincent and 20-year-old Havanna Holland-Miller with an attempted armed carjacking that occurred on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, in the 100 block of Talbott Avenue in Rockville.

Through the investigation, detectives identified Paredes-Vincent of Washington, D.C. and Holland-Miller of Southbridge, MA as the suspects.  On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Paredes-Vincent, charging him with attempted armed carjacking related charges. He is currently in jail in Alachua, Florida on an unrelated arrest. He is awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.


Maryland

The Montgomery County Green Bank is financing the 2.18-megawatt solar project at the Seneca Village Apartments in Gaithersburg. The project will bring affordable renewable energy to affordable multifamily properties, using sizable rooftop solar panels to help aid the county in its goal to significantly reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses produced.

The Maryland Energy Administration works closely with the Montgomery County Green Bank to combine resources to bring the necessary capital to mobilize projects across the state that advance reductions in energy use, improve resiliency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. MEA has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars directed toward projects, incorporated with Green Bank Financing. Examples include a resiliency planning effort involving sites across Montgomery County, a partnership between the Green Bank and Groundswell, Inc. and an energy efficiency project at Takoma Outlook, a multi-family community in Takoma Park, Maryland.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: With religious intolerance on the rise across the country, it is incumbent upon historians to document and record those experiences. And all too often, non-Christian religions like Islam are given short shrift in American history. In honor of Eid al-Fitr, Montgomery History will be making available its presentation Muslim Experiences in Montgomery County: A Panel Discussion starting Monday, April 24. The presentation was originally recorded at the 2018 Montgomery History Conference. The replay of the presentation will be available for a one-week period.
