Virtual Public Meeting on the Upton Drive Neighborhood Greenway Project to be Held on Thursday, Nov. 3

The Upton Drive Neighborhood Greenway project aims to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by managing the number and speed of vehicles. Tools can include additional signage, pavement markings, and traffic calming measures such as speed humps. The project limit is from East Avenue to the Crossway Montessori School.

Online registration is required to attend. Upon submission of your registration, Zoom will provide the link and passcode for the meeting. On the day of the Nov. 3 meeting, an electronic invitation to participate in this meeting will be emailed to you with the Zoom connection instructions. Questions and comments will become a matter of public record.

Update: Detectives Investigate Hit-and-Run Involving Bicyclist on Georgia Avenue

The preliminary investigation by detectives determined that a dark red or maroon 2003-2007 Honda Accord, was traveling south on Georgia Ave., when it struck a 19-year-old male bicyclist, that was traveling west across the roadway. The victim was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The vehicle did not remain on scene.

Detectives are currently searching for the striking vehicle, which has damage to the front right bumper and is missing the right side view mirror. Montgomery County Council Votes to Approve Thrive Montgomery 2050

For 18 months, Councilmembers have been working with staff and listening to suggestions from residents across Montgomery County to develop a general plan for the County’s future. The Council’s revised version of the Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee Draft of Thrive Montgomery 2050 contains the text and supporting maps for a comprehensive amendment to Montgomery County’s current General Plan (On Wedges and Corridors).

“Thrive is a compelling vision for Montgomery County’s future and lays a framework to preserve things that make our community great, while meeting the unique needs of our growing County,” Council President Gabe Albornoz said. “We’re grateful to everyone who engaged with us and shared valuable insights that helped inform our decision-making. Throughout this process, the Council has made time to incorporate voices from communities across the County and gather diverse perspectives and input.”

MCPD Autism/IDD Unit Hosts Driver Safety Course and Mock Traffic Stops

The Montgomery County Police Department – Autism/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Unit will be conducting a driver safety course on Tuesday, November 1, from 2-6pm at Public Safety Headquarters (100 Edison Park Drive) in Gaithersburg to teach those with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities the importance of being a safe driver and what to do if they are pulled over or in an accident. Per MCPD:

The Montgomery County Autism/IDD Unit was established in 2004 and provides a broad approach to safety and action, along with awareness, for those with autism and other intellectual disabilities.”

Bethesda Business to be Featured Next Month on ABC’s Shark Tank

Bethesda based clothing line Collars & Co. will be featured on the November 11 episode of Shark Tank on ABC. According to their website, Collars & Co.’s mission is to “provide men and women with extremely high quality clothing that not only looks great, but feels amazing as well.” Their signature item is the “Dress Collar Polo”, a buttery soft polo with a standard English spread collar that is said to be more comfortable than a normal collard shirt. Detectives Investigate Shooting in Downtown Silver Spring; Surveillance Video of Suspects Released

At approximately 10:36 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the intersection of Fenton St. and Ellsworth Dr. for the report of shots fired.

The preliminary investigation by detectives has determined that two Black males were shooting at one another. During the shooting, a commercial business was struck by a bullet, as well as a car driving on Fenton St. toward Ellsworth Dr.

Update: Victim’s Identity Released as Detectives Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Collision That Occurred on Midcounty Highway Saturday Night

At approximately 8:42 p.m., 6th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a pedestrian struck. The victim was pronounced dead on scene.

For reasons still under investigation, the victim, who was located in the roadway, was hit by a red Saturn Aura. The driver of the Saturn remained on scene following the collision. CRU detectives are working to locate the victim’s next of kin. His name will be released following proper notification of next of kin.

University of Maryland Announces $20M Investment in Financial Aid

“Since day one of my presidency, I have emphasized the importance of increasing financial support and access to our university,” said UMD President Darryll J. Pines. “Every Maryland student deserves an equal opportunity to attend the state’s flagship university, and the Terrapin Commitment program is one more measure we are taking to ensure that a University of Maryland education is affordable to all residents of our state.”

The goal of the Terrapin Commitment is to reduce the gap between a student’s total financial aid package and the cost of an education. The program will begin in January 2023 and ensures that tuition and fees are fully covered for Pell eligible, in-state students, who are enrolled full time and have unmet financial need. The program will dramatically reduce the financial barriers to obtaining a higher education for low-income Marylanders.

Wheaton Metro Station Phase 2 of Temporary Bus Bay Relocations to Start on Monday, Nov. 21

Per MCDOT:

Starting Monday, Nov. 21, and lasting for approximately five weeks, sections of the bus loop at the Wheaton Metro Station will be closed for pavement rehabilitation. During Phase 2, Bus Bays F, G, H, J, and K will be closed. Temporary bus boarding locations can be found on the map above. This project will result in smoother bus rides and an improved experience for Metro and Ride On customers. Passengers using Montgomery County’s Ride On buses are encouraged to wear a mask but are no longer required to wear them. Masks are available on all buses for riders who need them.

Governor Hogan Announces Maryland Mesonet Project to Enhance State’s Critical Infrastructure and Preparedness

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced a groundbreaking partnership between the State of Maryland and the University of Maryland to build and operate the Maryland Mesonet, a state-of-the-art network of 75 weather-observing towers across the state that will provide real-time community-level monitoring and improve situational awareness during rapidly changing weather conditions.

“The Maryland Mesonet partnership we are announcing today, through a new memorandum of understanding between the State of Maryland and the University of Maryland, will build a world-class network of state-of-the-art environmental monitoring stations to provide real-time data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” said Governor Hogan. “I am pleased to announce that we have committed $4 million dollars to this ambitious project, which will give our emergency managers even faster and more accurate satellite data to make critical decisions about preparedness and deploying resources.”
