Two Adult Males Arrested for McDonald’s Armed Robbery; Possibility of Additional Victims a Concern

On Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at approximately 2:05 a.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report for an armed robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that two suspects, traveling in a silver Chevrolet Cruz, entered the drive‐thru and ordered food. One of the suspects exited the vehicle, approached the cashier’s window, displayed a black handgun and told the cashier to leave. The cashier complied. The suspect then reached through the window and removed an undisclosed amount of money from a cash drawer. The suspects then left the location in the Chevrolet traveling eastbound on University Blvd W.

One of the first banks Gass robbed was in Montgomery County in 1977. In 2010 Gass pleaded guilty to robbing 19 banks between 2008 and 2009 in Florida. He was granted a compassionate release from prison in 2019 for medical reasons and moved back to MD, where he lived with his elderly parents at the time of his most recent arrest.

On July 14, at approximately 9:36 a.m., Montgomery County Police and Gaithersburg City police officers responded to a call for an attempted bank robbery that just occurred at the Wells Fargo Bank on the 600 block of North Frederick Ave.

MCPS Community Message Regarding Monkeypox

The Maryland Department of Health issued a statement on August 2, which includes details about case counts, testing and vaccination strategy, and contact tracing efforts. As of that date, there were 129 confirmed cases of MPX in the state of Maryland. Information about the Montgomery County public health response is available on the DHHS website, as are instructions on pre-registration for vaccination for eligible individuals. County residents and medical providers can contact the Montgomery County Communicable Disease Control team at 240-777-1755 with questions about county services.

Below are links to more information about MPX, including how it spreads, symptoms, prevention and treatment. In contrast to the early days of COVID-19, we know more about MPX, how it spreads and affects humans, and about the available vaccines and treatments. Individuals at a higher risk of being exposed to MPX should be vaccinated, take additional precautions to protect themselves, and seek a medical provider’s advice if they are concerned for symptoms of MPX.

Gaithersburg Based Novavax Announces Initiation of Phase 2b/3 Hummingbird Global Clinical Trial for the Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine in Children Aged Six Months Through 11 Years

“We are excited to begin the Hummingbird trial to study Nuvaxovid’s efficacy in children as young as six months through age 11,” said Stanley C. Erck, President and Chief Executive Officer, Novavax. “With a successful trial, we may have the opportunity to offer our COVID-19 vaccine to all age groups aged six months and older for protection against this ongoing pandemic.”

The trial will assess the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine in infants (six through 23 months of age), toddlers (two through five years) and children (six through 11 years). The trial is an age de-escalation trial and age groups will be tested sequentially. Participants have begun dosing in the six to 11-year-old age group. The trial will also have sentinel cohorts in each age group and cohort progression and age-de-escalation will occur after safety review.

Detectives Investigate Theft of Catalytic Converter

On Friday, July 29, 2022, at approximately 4:06 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report of a theft. Initial investigation revealed that at approximately 4:37 a.m., two suspects arrived in an unknown vehicle. The suspects used a jack and a power tool to remove the catalytic converter from the victim’s vehicle before leaving the scene.

The first suspect is described as a White male, approximately 20-years-old, with brown hair, wearing a black shirt and dark shorts. The second suspect is described as an unknown race male, wearing khaki pants and white shoes.

MCFRS Respond to House Fire Caused by Lightning Strike

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded a house fire on the 100blk of Carlisle Dr. in Coleville on Friday morning around 1am. The fire began in the attic and is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS, around 60 firefighters responded to the scene of the fire at the two-story home.

Detectives Investigate Commercial Armed Robbery of Exxon Gas Station; Surveillance Video of Suspect Released

At approximately 1:04 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the Exxon Gas Station in the 9300 block of Georgia Ave. for the report of an armed robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that the unknown suspect entered the store and asked about buying cigarettes. The suspect then pointed a black handgun at the victim and demanded cash. When the victim opened the register, the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and left the store.

Officials Launch Online Preregistration Survey for Monkeypox (MPX) Vaccine While Supplies Remain Limited

As of Aug. 4, there are 6,617 confirmed MPX cases in the United States and 157 cases in Maryland.

“We know that residents are concerned about MPX, and we continue to support the Maryland Department of Health’s effort to receive more vaccine supply from the federal government,” said Dr. James Bridgers, acting County Health Officer. “As with the early days of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, there is more demand for vaccination than there is supply. The preregistration system will help us identify those who are eligible for vaccination and provides us a way to contact them when vaccine doses are available.”

The 2022 Montgomery County Agricultural Fair takes place August 12-20 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds (501 Perry Parkway, Gaithersburg). Visit www.mcagfair.com to purchase tickets. General Admission tickets are $12 online vs. $15 at the gate and children 11 and under don’t pay for fair admission.

The fairgrounds are located at 501 Perry Parkway in Gaithersburg. General admission is $15 onsite and $12 online. Children 11-and-under are free. Parking on the fairgrounds site is $10. Free parking with shuttle bus service to the fairgrounds is available from nearby Lakeforest Mall at Lost Knife Road and Odenhal Ave.
