We are sad to report that Barry Schwartz, one of the owners of B.J. Pumpernickels, passed away today.
For over 20 years BJ Pumpernickels in Olney served amazing sandwiches, breakfast all day, and had one of the best pickle bars in the area!
It was located in the Olney Town Center Shopping Center from 1989 until the start of 2010.
When Harris Teeter made plans to move in, owner Barry Schwartz was offered other locations in the shopping center, but ultimately decided to close for good.
Our condolences go out to his friends and family.

Our deepest condolences go out to Barry’s family and all who knew him. I have such fond memories of going to Pumpernickels with my family. What’s going to happen to his current restaurant, Mike & Barry’s, in Silver Spring?
Nevermind. My parents (the ones who thought it was the same Barry) are now saying they only THINK one of the owners of Mike & Barrys is associated with Pumpernickles, but they aren’t sure. It could very well be a different Barry.
Condolences…prayers to the prayers.????
We always ate there before seeing a play at Olney Theatre…more than just great food…always a smile and a pleasant interaction with all the staff. .sad when it closed and even sadder to hear of Barry’s passing…condolences to the family and may good memories help comfort you all during this most difficult time

So sorry to hear the sad news
He was a great guy.
Prayers to Barry’s family. I remember one time when Barry came to the hospital I worked at, I went to visit him and brought him a plate of cookies. He was so happy I remembered him.
God Bless you, Barry. You were a true Mensch!
Memory Eternal.❤
Prayers for the family. Worked for Barry & Jerry for 2.5 years.
Barry was truly a funny man. He would have us in stitches. 🙂
We loved B.J. Pumpernickel’s, it was good for any occasion! Special moments with my daughters, a working breakfast, a meal out with friends! We’ve missed it very much.
