Montgomery Parks Announces Juneteenth Special Events

Per Montgomery Parks:
WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks(opens in a new tab), part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, will host several   special programs in celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. In addition, the department’s Open Parkways program will be extended through Tuesday, June 21, except for the portion of Little Falls Parkway which is closed to pedestrians and bikers for a traffic study.

Juneteenth Events

Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Josiah Henson Birthday Celebration, Josiah Henson Museum and Park

Come celebrate the life of Reverend Josiah Henson and Juneteenth weekend with free museum admission, hands-on activities, refreshments, and more from 10:00 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19, Woodlawn Manor Cultural Parks’ Juneteenth WeekendWoodlawn Manor Cultural Park

Take advantage of free museum admission all weekend, and enjoy The StoryWalk®Before She Was Harriet about young Harriet Tubman, presented in partnership with the Noyes Children’s Library Foundation.  On Saturday, the guided Underground Railroad Experience Trail Hike will be offered at 10:00 a.m. The 90-minute hike covers approximately two miles of natural surface wooded trails. Ages 7 and up. Fee: $8 per person. Registration required. (Limited same-day tickets sold at the Visitor Center.)

Open Parkways Schedule

The Open Parkways schedule will be extended for the holiday until 7 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

Portions of Sligo Creek Parkway and Beach Drive will be open to pedestrians and bicyclists for exercise and recreation.

Open to pedestrians and bicyclists (closed to motor vehicles), from Friday, June 17, at 9 a.m., to Tuesday, June 21, at 7 a.m.

  • Sligo Creek Parkway
  • Old Carroll Avenue to Piney Branch Road (1.1 miles)
  • Forest Glen Road to University Boulevard West (1.5 miles)
  • Beach Drive from Connecticut Avenue to Knowles Avenue (2.7 miles)

The Open Parkways program on Little Falls Parkway is suspended while a traffic study is underway for that portion of the parkway.

Juneteenth Weekend Operating Hours

The following facilities will be closed for the Juneteenth holiday:

  • Montgomery Parks Headquarters and Permits Offices
  • Montgomery Parks Customer Service Office
  • Black Hill Visitor Center, closed through the end of July. Outdoor areas and trails open from sunrise to sunset.
  • Locust Grove Nature Center, closed Mondays. Open Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Outdoor areas and trails open from sunrise to sunset.
  • Brookside Nature Center, closed Mondays. Open Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Outdoor areas and trails open from sunrise to sunset.
