In July we let you know that Dream on Me, the New Jersey-based company that recently purchased Buy Buy Baby’s brand and digital assets for $15.5 million and was a supplier for the store, was the successful bidder for 11 store leases at a bankruptcy auction for about $1.17 million. Buy Buy Baby’s sole Montgomery County location, at 1683 Rockville Pike in Rockville’s Congressional Plaza, closed its doors on Sunday, July 30th, but was included as one of 11 stores that will reopen. The store will be reopening on Saturday, November 18th. Per Buy Buy Baby Rockville:

Per the State of Maryland: “Governor Wes Moore today announced that the Maryland Department of Labor has secured $4 million through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Quality Jobs, Equity, Strategy, and Training Disaster Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grants program. The funding will be used to connect nearly 350 Marylanders to careers in fast-growing industries and strengthen Maryland’s talent pipeline in Western Maryland, Anne Arundel and Montgomery counties, and Baltimore City.
“More access to quality jobs and training opens doors to economic opportunity and prosperity,” said Gov. Moore. “Through this grant, we will continue to build a more equitable, more competitive, and more innovative economy for all Marylanders.”

Join Kaiser Permanente for Healthy at the Harbor, a free community health and wellness event taking place Saturday, June 6, from 11 am to 4 pm at National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Bring your family and friends for free full day of fun, fitness, and preventive care along the waterfront.
Throughout the day, Kaiser Permanente nurses and physicians will offer no-cost health screenings, alongside a health and wellness expo focused on preventive care education. A lively Kids’ Zone will keep children active and entertained with spin-art bikes, face painting, balloon art, games, and more.
Per Montgomery County: “The Montgomery County Anti-Hate Task Force’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and LGBTQ+ cohorts will present their policy recommendations to the task force at a virtual meeting on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. The Anti-Hate Task Force was formally adopted through a resolution with unanimous support in June. The task force is made up of community and faith leaders working to engage the community and develop recommendations to inform policies that promote safety and combat hate crimes in Montgomery County.
Cohort groups representing the Jewish, Black/African American, LGBTQ+, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latino/Hispanic and Muslim communities will present their policy recommendations at meetings throughout the fall. Each of the six cohort groups may also hold listening sessions to provide an opportunity for the public to engage and provide input.
Pines of Rome Express is now open at 121B Congressional Lane– the former home of Congressional Deli. Last year, we let you know that Pines of Rome, a Bethesda staple for over 50 years, tabbed WashUrban to spearhead their first ever search for a second location. The new restaurant is located beside/behind Mykonos Grill and near Bed Bath& Beyond.
The original restaurant, which will remain open, is located at 4918 Cordell Ave. in Bethesda. Pines of Rome moved to the location in 2017 and was previously located at 4709 Hampden Lane, opening in 1972. The restaurant is known for its extremely popular white pizza, spaghetti & meatballs, and other traditional Italian dishes. The express version will focus on carry-out and delivery. Take 5, which was founded as Rapid Oil Change in Louisiana in the 80s, is looking to open its first DC Metro Area location at 1470 Rockville Pike in Rockville. According to a report in Maryland Newsletters, Core Property Capital (the developer) has recently acquired a Take 5 franchise for Maryland, Delaware, DC and New Jersey that it wants to bring to the Pike location. 1470 Rockville Pike was previously home to a BB&T bank and is located across from the recently closed Miller’s Ale House.
Take 5 offers quick oil changes, minor repairs and other maintenance services. It has recently spread across the United States from Virginia to Texas, with 60+ locations and more in the way. Per the report, Core Property Capital hasn’t submitted plans yet, but has held its pre-submission meeting. We’ll provide updates as the situation progresses. Carmen’s Italian Ice is partnering with the owners of Kung Fu Tea at 130 Market St in Gaithersburg to open a new location. Carmen’s will be sharing the space with Kung Fu Tea, taking over the portion that is currently occupied by Tutti Frutti. According to Carmen’s, it will initially offer 3-4 flavors of custard, 6-8 flavors of Italian ice, milkshakes, and more. The plan is to open in about two weeks. Earlier this year Carmen’s partnered with the Clarksburg Market at 23329 Frederick Rd to open a similar concept in Clarksburg.

Jason Mandler – a native of Parsippany, New Jersey – opened Carmen’s Italian Ice & Cafe in Rockville, MD in 2001. According to the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, “Montgomery County has activated a Hypothermia Alert for extreme cold from 9 pm Thur, 11/2 to 9 am Fri, 11/3. Expect the wind chill to be below 32 degrees. Wear layers if you go outside. Take extra precautions if you spend significant time outdoors”
A Hypothermia Alert is issued for the County when forecasted temperatures, and/or wind chill, in at least part of the County fall below 32 degrees creating a hazardous situation in which hypothermia and frostbite are likely.
