Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore, First Lady Dawn Moore, and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller this evening attended National Night Out events in New Carrollton and Baltimore City. Annual National Night Out events promote police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie, and support for anti-crime efforts across Maryland.
“Public safety is my number one priority as governor and when we talk about public safety, everyone shares responsibility in making things better,” said Gov. Moore. “To all of our friends and neighbors in law enforcement, to the guardians, the parents, the village elders, and the community leaders—I want to partner with all of you to make our state safer. Together, we are going to build a safer Maryland for all.”
In February, we let you know that Hope Grows Child Development Center selected the Fox Chapel Shopping Center as the children’s daycare and educational facility’s third location in Montgomery County– taking over part of the space that was home to Gold’s Gym, prior to its move a couple miles away. Now we know that they’ve pulled a permit valued at $1.4 million and are ready to begin construction at the space, courtesy of Maryland Newsletters.
Founded and owned by Salema Horn, the group signed a lease with Fox Chapel, LLC for 10,803 square feet of space within the 115,000 square foot neighborhood shopping center positioned at 19721 North Frederick Road in Germantown. Hope Grows Child Development Center offers a range of programming for children ranging from infant to school age including before and after school daycare. The center focuses on providing a nurturing and educational environment with an emphasis on intellect and social development and maintaining an atmosphere that promotes respect for diversity, mutual trust and personal and social responsibility. The educational philosophy is guided by the standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and parents are recognized as an integral component of their child’s ongoing education.

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County will be offering funding support for independently owned and operated businesses with 20 or fewer employees impacted by the Purple Line construction through Phase III of its Purple Line Light rail grants program. Eligible businesses can start submitting applications on Aug. 15.
The County’s Business Center will host informational webinars on the program on Aug. 29, 30 and 31 in English, Spanish, and Amharic languages respectively at 8070 Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring. This is the third round of grants through which the County’s Business Center will offer $5,000 to qualifying small businesses in the construction corridor. This grant program is made possible through an $815,000 grant provided by the Maryland Department of Commerce.

This 6 week Saturday tennis clinic is designed for middle school players who want to learn and improve their tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment. Players will build confidence on the court while developing strong fundamentals and enjoying the game with other students.
The Takoma Park Police Criminal Investigations Division is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at about 11:05 am. The victim Nurhusen Hamid (pictured below) was working as a mobile mechanic on the Advanced Auto Parts parking lot in the 6300 block of New Hampshire Ave, Takoma Park, Montgomery County, Maryland. An unknown suspect approached the victim and shot him. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect fled the parking lot on foot onto Eastern Ave and entered a waiting white in colored SUV then fleeing the area into the District of Columbia on New Hampshire Ave. Suspect is described as a black, male, wearing a white tee shirt, dark baseball cap and jeans.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced the award of more than $200,000 in competitive grants to support learning experiences and educational opportunities focused on environmental issues. Funding for the educational programs is provided by the state’s Chesapeake Bay Implementation Grant and Aquatic Resources Education Program, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Grant funding is awarded for Fiscal Year 2024 to the following organizations, pending final approval by federal partners:
Easy Little Plants, a new store selling “happy houseplants in homemade soil” has opened at 3412 North High St, Suite B in Olney (located behind the Exxon in Georgia Avenue).
Owner Savannah, 21, mixes each batch of soil herself, and takes pride in the effect it has on the pants sold at the store. The plants come pre-potted in repurposed glassware that allow you to look through the glass to see the roots and soil. “It’s much easier to look and see when your plant could use a drink.”
Firehouse Subs will open its third Montgomery County location when the new restaurant opens in the Wheaton Mall food court. An exact date is not available, but the space is now closed off with Firehouse Subs signage posted while construction begins behind the wall. Firehouse Subs has current MoCo locations in Germantown (19851 Century Blvd) and Rockville (28 Upper Rock Circle).

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will perform patching and resurfacing spanning four miles of roadway on MD 193 (University Boulevard), MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) and MD 410 (Riverdale Road) in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties beginning Wednesday, July 26.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture today announced a new grant program that helps urban farms and community gardens purchase and install equipment to access water and electricity needed to sustain and grow their operations. Approved by the Maryland General Assembly in 2022, the Urban Agriculture Water and Power Infrastructure Grant Program provides the department with up to $500,000 in annual funding through Fiscal Year 2027.
“Urban and community farms provide a needed source of fresh, locally grown food for many city residents,” said Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks. “During the hot summer months, irrigation becomes essential for these growers. This grant program helps small, urban operations purchase and install equipment that will allow them to connect to existing water and electricity sources,” he said.

The Maryland Horse Industry Board has announced they will begin accepting grant applications for the 2024 grant year. The goals of the grant program are to promote the Maryland equine industry by increasing public awareness and participation, advancing education and training, supporting and promoting equestrian events, programs, and activities, and preserving access and use of public lands for riding. The deadline to apply is October 6.
“I encourage all members of the horse industry to apply for these grants,” said Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks. “The monies provide opportunities for growth of the industry in Maryland. Thank you to the Maryland Horse Industry Board for offering this fantastic grant opportunity.”
