Germantown

Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred on Clopper Road between Waring Station Road and Game Preserve Road early Tuesday morning.  According to MCPD, “At approximately 12:37 a.m., on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, a Honda was traveling north on Clopper Rd., when for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The adult male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.


Crime

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “the Honorable Eric Johnson sentenced defendant, Jefferson Delgado, 29, of Gaithersburg, to life in prison suspend all but 30 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release. The sentence was handed down yesterday in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD. On March 30th, 2023, a jury found Delgado guilty of first-degree attempted murder for shooting a man outside of Antojitos restaurant located on East Diamond Avenue Gaithersburg.

This shooting Aril 18, 2021, was prompted by an argument between two groups of people at the restaurant. It happened in the parking lot outside of Antojitos at 1:22 a.m. and was caught on surveillance footage. After retrieving a shotgun from a friend’s vehicle, Delgado opened fire at least twice hitting the victim with two bullets. He then ran to a parking garage where he was captured by another surveillance camera running back and forth. He is seen attempting to hide the weapon. The victim in this case survived. Prosecution was handled by Assistant State’s Attorney Teresa Casafranca.


Olney

Taco Bar at 18100 Georgia Ave in Olney has permanently closed. The restaurant opened in the former Jerry’s Subs & Pizza spot back in 2018 and served a variety of tacos, tortas, and soups.  Taco Bar has additional locations at 3 Russell Ave in Gaithersburg and 1450 W. Patrick St in Frederick. Popular gas station restaurant Taco Bar El Guero (in Rio) is not related to these restaurants.

Gaithersburg

Chevy Chase

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Monday, May 1, 2023, in the 5500 block of Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase. Detectives have released photos of the male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of an armed robbery that occurred inside a commercial building. The investigation has revealed that the suspect approached a female victim in a stairwell of the commercial building. The suspect pushed her against the wall, touched her inappropriately, displayed a knife and threatened to kill her. The suspect took her cell phone and threw it against the wall. The suspect then stole her wallet and left the scene.


Gaithersburg

TaKorean, a Korean taco grill located at 261 Kentlands Blvd (former Nalley Fresh location) in Gaithersburg, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Gaithersburg Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, May 9 at 10:30am and is offering free food for guests from 11am to 2pm. The restaurant offers Korean style tacos and bowls with options including chicken/Dak Halbi, steak/Bulgogi, pork/Bo Ssam, and tofu/Hoisin. Takorean held its soft opening on Thursday, May 4.

This is TaKoreans first location outside of D.C. According to RestaurantDive, TaKorean is currently looking to open one restaurant at a time with future franchisees, and wants to ensure success at its initial franchise locations to create a strong base for a burgeoning franchise program. The company is open to multi-unit deals, but isn’t seeking them out. TaKorean is currently casting a wide net for potential markets, and once it sees brand recognition and franchisee interest in a particular market, it expects to build up that area, Lenard said. TaKorean is flexible on potential restaurant sizes, depending on a market’s real estate conditions.


Health

Per the Maryland Department of Health: Following Governor Wes Moore’s proclamation of May as Tickborne Disease Awareness Month in Maryland, the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) today launched a Tickborne Disease awareness campaign encouraging Marylanders to take simple precautions to prevent illness caused by infected ticks.

The best way to avoid tickborne diseases is to avoid ticks and their habitat. Ticks prefer humid environments and can be found outdoors in leaf litter, weeds, tall grasses, shrubs, and woods.


Bethesda

Bethesda

Lucky Strike, located in Montgomery Mall (Bethesda), is offering an hour of free bowling for teachers this week (Monday, May 8th until Friday, May 12th) for National Teacher Appreciation week. Lucky Strike opened in 2017 on the lower level of the mall in the space that was previously home to movie theaters. Hours of operation and additional information below:

Arts

MCPS has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 24th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the designation, MCPS staff answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.


Education

Northwood High School has received the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation. The RAMP designation recognizes schools committed to delivering a comprehensive, data-informed school counseling program in accordance with The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, and an exemplary educational environment.
