The Joint Corp., a Scottsdale, Arizona based operator and franchisor of chiropractic clinics, opened 130 new clinics across the country in 2021 to bring its national count up to 706. It was originally founded in 1999 by a Doctor of Chiropractic with “a vision to transform the traditional, often misunderstood concept of routine chiropractic care by making it more convenient, friendly and affordable.” In March 2010, The Joint was re-founded with the acquisition of the original eight franchised clinics.

MoCo Police

Per MCPD: Members of the Montgomery County Police Alcohol Holiday Task Force will be devoting their full time and attention to detecting alcohol-related offenses this holiday season.

During the week of November 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20), task force officers arrested 38 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI).


Bethesda

Sebastian Salazar joined ESPN in late 2016 as a host, reporter and play-by-play announcer. Salazar appears regularly on ESPNFC as well as the network’s Major League Soccer coverage. Currently, the Bethesda native is covering the World Cup at ESPN.

Glenmont

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a fire on the 12000 block of Saw Mill Ct. off of Shorefield Dr. In Wheaton-Glenmont. at approximately 11:15 on Monday night.

According to our public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, crews arrived on the scene of an “Outside-In fire” that started on the deck of the townhome and extended up the rear of the home and into the attic of the home. The origin of the fire was an electrical malfunction of a heated cat house that was located on the deck behind the home. Approximately $300k of damages were incurred. Two adults, one child, and one cat were displaced and there were no injuries.


Bethesda

Bethesda based clothing line Collars & Co. was featured on the November 11 episode of Shark Tank on ABC.  Many may have seen the clothing company’s signature item, the “Dress Collar Polo”, a buttery soft polo with a standard English spread collar that is said to be more comfortable than a normal collared shirt. Collar & Co went on Shark Tank seeking $300K for 4% equity at a $7.5 Million valuation from the sharks. Continue reading if you want to know how it went.

According to its website, Collars & Co.’s mission is to “provide men and women with extremely high quality clothing that not only looks great, but feels amazing as well.” The business sells shirts, sweaters, underwear, and accessories. Bethesda resident Justin Baer presented his product, asking for $300K for a 4% equity (valuation of $7.5M). The business launched in 2021 and went viral on TikTok, leading to 500 orders off the bat and $40K in revenue the first month after the video’s release.


Beyond MoCo

Howl at the Moon, a dueling piano bar with locations across the country, is now open and ready to bring endless entertainment to Chinatown in DC. The new location is at 900 7th Street NW in Chinatown. Howl at the Moon previously had a location in Baltimore for nearly two decades before it closed in early 2020.

Business

Progress has been made at the 192,000-square foot building, with a five-level parking garage containing up to 562 spaces, that is currently being constructed for Research and Development use at 9810 Darnestown Rd next to the Travilah Square shopping center (see featured photo above and rendering below).

Horizon Therapeutics plc announced in January that it signed a long-term, full-building lease with Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. to be the first tenant at the Alexandria Center® at Traville Gateway campus in Rockville, Maryland. When completed, the state-of-the-art facility will serve as the company’s primary East Coast research and development and technical operations hub. Construction at the nearly 200,000-square-foot site is well underway and Horizon expects to start work on interior improvements in 2023. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.


Events

The Town of Kensington has partnered with KTown Ladies to bring the Town of Kensington residents the 2nd annual seasonal lighting ceremony on Friday, December 2nd from 6pm-7pm at Howard Avenue Park (3716 Howard Ave).

“Please join us for hot adult beverages, hot cider and hot chocolate, s’mores by the fire pits, music, and merry making! The lighting ceremony begins at 6:15pm and there will also be a brief announcement about the home decorating award contest categories and rules. Enjoy the lights in Howard Avenue Park every evening through January 8.”


Downtown Silver Spring

Though it has been open for a couple weeks, an opening ceremony will take place at Silver Spring Ice Skating at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring at 6:00pm.

The event will include Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Will Jawando participating in the opening ceremony that also consists of a coat and sock drive. Anyone who donates a coat or new package of socks will be able to skate for free between 6:30pm and 9pm on Tuesday night, November 22.


WMATA

Metro welcomes customers and visitors to the region to take Metro wherever your travels take you during the Thanksgiving holiday. On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24, Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule, with trains operating from 7 a.m. until midnight. MetroAccess customers may make a reservation to travel on the holiday; however subscription trips will be canceled.

The day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 25, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m., closing at 1 a.m., and Metrobus and MetroAccess will operate normal weekday service.
