Traffic

In addition to the emergency work on southbound I-270 prior to I-370 to repair a sinkhole, The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) started a project last night, Wednesday, June 15, to resurface one mile of southbound I-270 (Eisenhower Highway) between MD 121 (Clarksburg Road) and MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) in Montgomery County. The resurfacing is part of an overall $4.3 million project to improve traffic flow by extending the acceleration lane along southbound I-270, beginning at the existing I-270 southbound truck weigh station, south of Old Hundred Road.

Crews are scheduled to work starting Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m., requiring single- and multiple-lane closures on southbound I-270 within the project limits overnight until 4 a.m. Thursday, June 16. Work will continue 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings through mid-July. All work is weather permitting, and additional workdays and times may be needed to expedite the project and keep all resurfacing and pavement marking activity on schedule. MDOT SHA’s contractor Concrete General Inc., of Gaithersburg, is performing the work.

According to Montgomery County Police, at 1:42 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8th, the Montgomery County Police Department responded to a call for service in the area of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home in Chevy Chase. Traffic

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) continues to remind the public of emergency road work closing the two right lanes on southbound I-270, just prior to I-370, due to a sinkhole. Motorists are to expect “major delays” and are asked to use 355 as an alternate route. You can see live traffic updates here.

According to WTOP, the sinkhole was the result of a broken 6-foot drainage pipe that runs underneath I-270 before Interstate 370. “Part of that pipe, it’s corrugated pipe, has become compromised, so we had to close two right lanes at this time, so we can get in there and assess what’s going on,” Gischlar said.

MoCo Libraries

The Silver Spring Library is located at 900 Wayne Ave. in Downtown Silver Spring.

The renaming of the branch follows an executive order signed by County Executive Elrich on Feb. 28 to honor the achievements and life of Brig. Gen. McGee, who was a County resident and passed away at age 102 on Jan. 16. He served as a fighter pilot and member of the 332nd Fighter Squadron, famously known as the “Tuskegee Airmen,” an all-Black unit in World War II. He later flew combat missions in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
