After serving the Gaithersburg community for nearly six decades, Walnut Hill Barber Shop is closing its doors for good this Saturday, August 30th. The beloved shop, located at 16527 S Frederick Ave., has been a staple for generations of local families.
On Thursday night, officers from the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) were involved in an incident that unfolded on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. At approximately 8:16 pm, officers from the 3rd District attempted to initiate a traffic stop after identifying a stolen license plate on a vehicle suspected to be stolen. The location of the attempted stop was 9520 Georgia Ave.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has introduced the Refrigerator Curriculum– a “one-page, easy-to-read overview of what students will be learning each marking period.”
On Saturday, August 30, National Chess Master David Bennett will visit the Westfield Montgomery Chess Lounge in Bethesda to play simultaneous matches against 20 attendees from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Guests can register onsite at noon, and open play will also be available. (more…)
Reserve your spot for an after-hour event with multi-disciplinary artist Sky Hopinka, Thursday, Nov. 5, 6–9 PM. Experience monumental nature-inspired artworks in the Water’s Edge exhibition, make your own artwork to take home at the National Museum of the American Indian.
Sky Hopinka’s photo and video art—including This is a mnemonic for Truman Lowe in the museum’s collection—shares Truman Lowe’s interest in Indigenous homelands, cultural knowledge, and traditional practices. Hopinka contributed to the exhibition catalog for Water’s Edge: The Art of Truman Lowe, writing on Lowe’s lasting impact on his work. Hopinka joins the museum for this special after hours event featuring a screening of three of his short video works followed by a discussion with Rebecca Head Trautmann, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and exhibition curator, along with art-making activities, and time to enjoy Lowe’s work currently on view. Sky Hopinka has been widely recognized for his experimental short films and photo-based works. A MacArthur Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow, and Forge Project Fellow, his work has been shown in major film festivals, museums, and international exhibitions and is in numerous prominent museum collections. Hopinka is currently an assistant professor in the department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University.

Eugene Gligor, 45, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with 22 to serve and five years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2001 killing of Leslie Preer in Chevy Chase, a case solved in 2024 through forensic genetic genealogical DNA analysis. The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) has partnered with the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) to provide discounted tuition for employees and their families, offering expanded opportunities for undergraduate and graduate programs. As part of the agreement, UMGC will award up to 60 credits to officers who complete police training and may grant up to 30 additional credits for prior learning and work experience, helping expedite the path toward a degree. The Montgomery County Planning Board and the Montgomery County Planning Department announced their September 2025 calendar of events and meetings.
Nearly 160,000 students returnee to school on Tuesday, Aug. 26 for the start of the 2025–2026 school year. MCPS has shared that there are 24 new principals (or new to their school) who are excited to meet their students and families. The following was shared in the MCPS Staff Bulletin:
Bao Bei is now open at 12055 Rockville Pike in the Montrose Crossing shopping center. The fast-casual restaurant is serving up authentic Taiwanese street food. Founded by the talented and Montgomery County-raised Kevin Hsieh, Bao Bei has built a loyal following from its roots as a ghost kitchen and its national television appearance, and it is now ready to serve the community from its new brick-and-mortar location.
