Joint Statement from the Principals of Walter Johnson and Bethesda Chevy-Chase High Schools Regarding Student Fight That Broke Out After Friday Night’s Game

Following last night’s varsity football game at Bethesda-Chevy Chase (B-CC) High School between B-CC and Walter Johnson, a fight between students broke out at the nearby Bethesda Metro Station which resulted in serious student injuries. The principals of those schools released the following community message on Saturday afternoon:

Last night, Friday, September 1, B-CC hosted Walter Johnson for our first football game of the fall season. The game went well and was an exciting match. Our fans and attendees were great and everyone seemed to have a fun evening. The safety plans jointly made by both schools worked well on campus and all of the fans left school grounds safely.

Man Accidentally Shoots Himself in a Car in Chevy Chase; Non-Life Threatening Injuries Sustained

At approximately 6:35PM on Wednesday evening, an individual handling a rifle accidentally shot himself on Willard Avenue near MD-355 Wisconsin Avenue. The incident occurred while the man was in a car that was parked near the outdoor dining area of a restaurant, according to our public safety reporter Cordell Pugh. Westbound Willard was briefly blocked by the response while Montgomery County Police 2nd District handling the scene.

The Commander of MCPD’s 2nd district tweeted the following update, “Officers are in the area of Willard/Friendship Blvd for an accidental discharge of a firearm. There is no threat to the community at this time. Adult male transported with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Summer Metropolitan Restaurant Week runs from Monday, August 28 until Sunday, September 3, with various Montgomery County restaurants participating (listed below). The event is one of the area’s signature dining promotions that closes out summer and Labor Day Weekend.

County Executive Elrich to Hold the First of 10 ‘Community Conversations’ to Seek Input on Fiscal Year 2025 Operating Budget on Thursday, Sept. 14

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, along with the County’s regional services offices and community partners will host 10 Community Conversations from September through December to seek input on the Fiscal Year 2025 Operating Budget. The first conversation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Mid-County Recreation Center in Layhill.

Connecticut Avenue Reopens in Both Directions After Today’s Extended Closure

Connecticut Ave. was closed in both directions between Chevy Chase Lake Dr. & Dunlop St. in Chevy Chase as the result of downed trees and wires, according to a tweet from Montgomery County Police Tuesday morning. Drivers were advised to seek an alternate route and to expect significant delays. An update provided on Tuesday night by Alert Montgomery states that all lanes have reopened in both directions on Connecticut Ave (MD-185) between Chevy Chase Lake Dr. and Dunlop St.

Adult Bike and Scooter Classes This September, October and November

Per MCDOT: The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), in collaboration with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), is offering adult bike classes in September, October and November. The classes include both Learn to Ride and Basic Skills classes. MCDOT also will offer four free, walk-up scooter classes following select bike classes.

Advance registration is required to participate in the bicycle classes and cost $10 for Montgomery County residents. There is no charge for WABA or Capital Bikeshare For All members. Bicycles and helmets will be provided at no charge for the adult Learn to Ride class participants and can be rented from WABA, if needed, for the Basic Skills class participants. Scooter classes are free of charge.

The Montgomery County Green Bank (Green Bank) and National Capital Bank (NCB) have collaborated to provide a customized financing solution for an energy efficiency project at Kenwood House Cooperative (Kenwood House) in Chevy Chase, MD. Through a participation loan transaction totaling $1,200,000, Kenwood House will implement crucial upgrades such as a domestic hot water heating system, building envelope improvements, and electric vehicle charger infrastructure. This groundbreaking financing structure marks a significant milestone for the partnership between the Green Bank and National Capital Bank.
