Maryland State Trooper Rescues Woman Who Was Trapped In A Burning Vehicle In Frederick County

Per the Maryland State Police: The quick response by Maryland State Police helped save the life of a woman after her vehicle caught fire this afternoon in Frederick County. Shortly after 12 p.m. this afternoon, Sergeant Brian Blubaugh assigned to the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, working out of the New Market Scale House and President of the Maryland Troopers Association, was the first to arrive on the scene following a single-vehicle crash on westbound I-70 at mile marker 49 in Frederick County. According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford van, operated by a 69-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, was traveling westbound on I-70 when for unknown reasons, traveled off of the roadway and struck an embankment when the vehicle began to catch fire.

Sergeant Blubaugh, along with multiple citizens, helped extract the woman from the burning vehicle, ultimately saving her life. The driver was transported by ground to Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland for treatment of her injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Metro: Tenleytown-AU Station east entrance to temporarily close

Metro is accelerating the escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU Station and will replace the two east entrance escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Starting Monday, August 28, 2023, the entrance on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue, closest to 40th Street, will close for approximately four months. By closing the east entrance, construction crews can work on both escalators at the same time, increasing project efficiency and reducing the overall project duration by roughly two months.

During the entrance closure, construction crews will also continue to replace the final escalator that runs from the intermediate level to the mezzanine. Metro began construction to replace four entrance escalators and three internal escalators at this station in August 2021. To date, four escalators have been replaced at the station, including the two escalators at the west entrance. All escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU will be complete when the east entrance reopens in late December. Customer Impacts:

The Original Steak and Hoagies to Open First Maryland Location This Weekend

The Original Steaks and Hoagies will open its first Maryland location this weekend at 10450 Owings Mills Blvd in Owings Mills. The Ohio-based franchise offers specialty cheesesteaks like “The Hangover,” with hot sauce, fried egg, bacon, onions, hot peppers, and cheese whiz, and the “Black And Blue,” with Cajun seasoning, mushrooms, and blue cheese cream. In addition to to hoagies/cheesesteaks, menu items include wings, salads, fried pickles, and pretzels. According to a report by Baltimore’s ABC2, the chain plans on opening five restaurants in Maryland, with Columbia and College Park mentioned as possible locations.

Maryland Renaissance Festival Returns This Weekend

The Maryland Renaissance Festival, which takes places annually at 1821 Crownsville Rd in Annapolis, returns this Saturday for its 47th season. The festival will be open weekends from August 26 through October 22 and tickets can be purchased at www.rennfest.com. Per the event’s website:

MCFRS Assist With 3-Alarm Fire in College Park

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MFCRS) assisted with a 3-alarm fire that occurred Monday, August 21, in College Park Maryland. According to the Prince George’s County Fire Department, “Approx 8:10am #PGFD units were dispatched to the 10100 block of Baltimore Ave in College Park for a reported structure fire. On scene crews found a 3-story multi-family dwelling w/fire showing through roof.” The bulk of the fire had been extinguished by 9am.

Metro to Host Back-to-School Celebration and School Supply Giveaway on Saturday, August 19

Per WMATA: Metro is kicking off the new school year with our first Back-to-School Celebration and School Supply Giveaway. Families across the DMV are invited to join us at the Fort Totten Station on Saturday, Aug. 19, for music, food, games, and free school supplies.

The Metro Transit Police Department’s Community Services Bureau will host the inaugural back-to-school event. School supplies, collected by Metro employees across the region, will be provided to school kids and teens in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. “This is an opportunity for our MTPD officers and employees to support the DMV and create positive relationships with the community,” said MTPD Chief Michael Anzallo. “Metrorail, Metrobus and MTPD help thousands of kids get to and from school throughout the year. In addition to keeping them safe, we want to ensure that every student has the supplies they need to start school.”

Howard County Inmate Escapes Transport Van Wednesday Morning

According to Howard County Police, around 8:30am Wednesday morning police were notified that a Department of Corrections inmate, incarcerated for burglary, escaped a transport van in the area of Dorsey Run Rd/32. Police are searching on foot and with drones, with the help of neighboring jurisdictions, including Anne Arundel County Police and Maryland State Police.

Randy Morris, 38, is described as a white male, five feet nine inches tall, 130-140 pounds, bald, with a beard. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and blue shorts and is no longer wearing handcuffs or shackles. Anyone who sees Morris should call 911. Maryland State Police is taking the lead on the search with Howard County Police assisting.

Governor Wes Moore Tours Secret Service Training Center in Prince George’s County

Governor Moore Tours James J. Rowley Secret Service Training Center

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Moore yesterday toured the United States Secret Service James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel to receive a briefing on the facility’s expansion plans. The governor reviewed 17 expansion and renovation projects, aligned in steps between FY24 and FY27, including a proposed 755,000 square feet of new facilities, the renovation of 53,000 square feet and continued use of 111,000 square feet.

“It is my honor to stand with the dedicated public servants of the United State Secret Service who are entrusted with protecting key leaders, locations, and events every day; they are the guardians of our democracy,” said Gov. Wes Moore. “Prince George’s County deserves to be the home of greater federal investment, and I am encouraged that the expansion of the Rowley Training Center is ready to move forward.”

State Police Helicopter Crew Rescues Three In Separate Hoist Missions In West Virginia

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police helicopter crew rescues three people in two separate hoist missions Sunday in West Virginia. Shortly after 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command was called to perform an aerial rescue for an injured hiker and his teenage son. The father-son pair had been out in the woods in Tucker County, West Virginia since Saturday, when the father suffered an injury. Trooper 5, based out of the Cumberland Section, was requested for the aerial rescue due to the rescuers’ limited resources, terrain difficulties, an extended extrication time and the nature of the father’s injuries.

The helicopter was configured for a hoist while the pilots filed for an instrument flight rules clearance. These rules are rules and regulations to govern flight under conditions in which flight by outside visual reference is not safe. Once overhead, the 49-year-old injured hiker, and his 13-year-old son, were located along the Red Creek Trail in Dolly Sods along the river.

Montgomery County Resident Catches World Record $6.2 Million Blue Marlin

Montgomery County resident John Ols (Laytonsville) has caught a 640.5 lb blue marlin, earning him a world record of $6.2 million at this year’s White Marlin Open in Ocean City, MD.

Per the White Marlin Open: On the last day of the 50th Annual White Marlin Open, the Floor Real out of Ocean City, MD weighed a 640.5-pound blue marlin to take $6,200,000 of the $10.5 million dollar total purse. The blue was caught by John Ols from Laytonsville, MD.
