Even in a 48-18 preseason loss to the New England Patriots, the Washington Commanders found some bright spots. Despite missing 30 players, head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt were encouraged by the performance of several young players, most notably rookie defensive tackle Johnny Newton.

Rookie defensive tackle Johnny Newton, a second-year player, was a major highlight. Whitt noted that Newton had a “good day,” with “really nice rushes” and “one-on-one wins.” After dealing with injuries last season, Newton looks healthy and ready to take on a significant starting role. His strip-sack was one of the few big plays for the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders and New England Patriots held a joint practice session, providing a competitive look at both teams ahead of their preseason matchup. According to reports from various journalists on the scene, the Commanders’ offense, particularly the offensive line and quarterback Jayden Daniels, had a strong day, while a couple of Patriots players also made an impact.

With the Washington Commanders preparing for their first preseason game on Friday against the Patriots, several rookies are making a name for themselves in training camp. During the 2024 NFL season, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a rib injury that was initially considered “week-to-week.” The injury occurred on October 20, 2024, during the first offensive drive of a game against the Carolina Panthers. In a recent video, Daniels casually mentioned that his rib was broken (video below).
