Per WMATA: This July 4, let Metro get you to and from Independence Day festivities stress and fare-free. Metrorail, Metrobus, and MetroAccess will be fare-free on Tuesday, July 4 from 5 p.m. until the system closes, with frequent service to the National Mall and other celebrations across the region.

Beginning at 5 p.m. on July 4, Metrorail faregates will be open, and fare-free signage will be posted throughout the stations and on buses to communicate that customers do not need SmarTrip cards if using Metro after 5 p.m. “The Metro Board of Directors is proud to support our region’s Independence Day celebrations by providing fare-free service for all customers traveling after 5 p.m. on July 4,” said Metro Board Chair Paul C. Smedberg. “The best way to beat traffic and get to barbeques, parades, and fireworks is with Metro, America’s transit system.”


Crimson Coward, a Nashville hot chicken restaurant founded in the Los Angeles area in 2018, recently opened its first East Coast location a few months ago in Northern Virginia. At that time, the company announced an additional 25 restaurants planned for the D.C. area in NoVa. Now, they plan to add an additional 25 restaurants in Maryland.

QSR reports that “The L.A. hot chicken franchise plans to open 25 locations in Maryland as well as 25 total stores  in Virginia.” According to the report, Restaurant Management Group-Mid Atlantic (RMG-MA) will develop, franchise, and support all stores in Maryland and Virginia. Exact locations of the restaurants have likely not been finalized yet, so they are not available at this time.


The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) has forecast a Code Red air day for the metropolitan Washington region on Thursday, June 29. Code Red levels mean the air is unhealthy for everyone. Smoke coming from wildfires in Canada is contributing to the increased levels of fine particle pollution. The 7th edition of the International Colombian Festival of Washington DC will take place on Saturday, July 22nd 2022, from 11:00AM at 8:00PM at Catholic University (University Garage, 3598 John McCormack Rd NE, DC 20310).

Last year’s festival included over 5,000 spectators in attendance and a large turnout is expected again this year. The festival will include “food, folklore, dance, art and tradition.” Organizers Go Columbia LLC say “This year, we have MEXICO as a guest country and we are anxiously looking forward to even greater success. In the past, we have counted with the participation of well-renowned artists and recipients of Grammy awards, and this year we are not expecting less as we are pushing for unique.”

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), there is increased confidence in severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds on Monday afternoon. Latest update from the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (NWSSPC) has brought an Enhanced Risk for severe storms along/east of the I-95 corridor. Per the NWS, we “have multiple ways to get warnings tomorrow.”

The Capital Weather Gang tweeted that there is an “ENHANCED (level 3 out of 5) risk of severe storms in DC area Monday afternoon-evening — not too common. Damaging winds, large hail and a tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Stay weather aware Monday…”

At 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2002, a shot was fired through the window of a Michaels craft store in Aspen Hill. The bullet narrowly missed Ann Chapman, a cashier at the store. Since no one was injured, the shot was assumed to be random, and no serious alarms were raised. Approximately one hour later, at 6:30 p.m., James Martin, a 55-year-old program analyst at NOAA, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse grocery store located in Glenmont.


Abby Meyers is Whitman High School’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,700 points and was the Ivy League Player of the Year last year before transferring to the University of Maryland for her senior season. On Tuesday, she signed a hardship contract with the Washington Mystics Tuesday. Meyers, who was a captain in her only year with the Terps, was drafted 11th overall in the first round of the WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings, but was waived prior to the start of the season.

A hardship contract is commonly used when a team has fewer than 10 players available for a game. The Mystics are on a three-game winning streak and Meyers scored 2 points in 6 minutes in her debut– the team’s most recent game on Thursday. Now in its 31st year, the Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle continues to be a fan favorite with DC area residents and tourists alike. Jordan Hawkins, who is coming off of leading the UConn Huskies to a National Championship, has reached another milestone. The young man from Gaithersburg was drafted 14th overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2023 NBA Draft. Hawkins is a Montgomery County native who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and Gaithersburg High School for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to DeMatha.

Hawkins was a top 50 recruit, who came to UConnfollowing two years at powerhouse program DeMathaCatholic (Hyattsville, Md.) under Coach Mike Jones. He played AAU for Team Durant under Coach Angel Hernandez, and as a senior at DeMatha, averaged 19.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.9 blocks, while shooting .636 overall and .464 from three-point range to lead DeMatha to an 11-0 record and was named 2020-21 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. Hawkins was a two-time Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention pick and averaged 20.2 points per game as a sophomore when he was at Gaithersburg High School (per UCONN).


According to the Metro Transit Police Department, on Tuesday, June 20th, a passenger boarded the train at the Silver Spring Metro Station and at some point in time, managed to get on top of the train to ride it. The passenger was

Per a FOX 5 report, “Around 4:37 p.m., rail operators advised that a person was possibly on the tracks. The train was stopped at Rhode Island Ave. and the operator got out of the train to look. It was confirmed then that a victim was underneath the train.” The victim showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:23 p.m.
