For nearly a decade, Churchill football had struggled to get over the hump against Northwest. The Bulldogs had dropped eight of their last nine meetings with the Jaguars, including a heart-breaking 21–20 loss the last time these two clashed. But on Friday night in Germantown, Churchill rewrote the script in dramatic fashion.
The Maryland Terrapins stayed undefeated on Saturday afternoon with a commanding 44-17 win over the Towson Tigers, and two Montgomery County products played leading roles in the victory. Quince Orchard graduate Iverson Howard paced the Terps on the ground, while Paint Branch alumnus Octavian Smith Jr. delivered the team’s biggest performance through the air.
The Maryland State Board of Education, along with State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey M. Wright, has honored the three nominees for the 2025 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award.

Two 15-year-old students were taken into custody after Northwood High School was placed on secure status and later lockdown Thursday, with officers recovering a BB gun and a live round. Both teens face charges related to weapons and disruption of school operations. (more…)

The Winston Churchill High School community (Potomac, MD) is mourning the loss of legendary football coach Fred Shepherd, a man whose influence extended far beyond the sidelines and into the lives of generations of student-athletes.
12:55pm update: 2D officers have two students in custody following the report of a gun on campus. A BB gun was recovered during the investigation. @MCPS has lifted the lockdown at Northwood HS. A news release will be distributed with more detailed information.
The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has released an “incident alert” that involves MCPS placing Northwood High School, currently located on Old Georgetown Rd. in North Bethesda, on lockdown while police investigate a report of a gun. This incident is separate from the earlier call, which was cleared by police and unfounded.
