More than 400 Montgomery County Public Schools students in Automotive Trades and IT Foundations programs were honored at Career Day at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg for earning industry certifications, winning SkillsUSA competitions, and receiving scholarships supporting continued education and employment opportunities in automotive and technology fields.

Fara Dillon has been named the 2025 MCPS Middle School Counselor of the Year. An MCPS alumna, Dillon began her educational journey at Stone Mill Elementary– where she also served as a counseling intern in 2020– then attended Cabin John Middle School and graduated from Wootton High School, where she interned as a counselor in 2019.

Today, the State Board and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) honored Maryland’s outstanding National Blue Ribbon School award recipients for 2024, which included two Montgomery County schools. Recognized for exemplary performance and significant improvement in student achievement, the awards celebrate schools that have achieved one of the nation’s highest honors.

MCPS recently shared that the community gathered at Albert Einstein High School on May 20th to celebrate the Class of 2025 Business Management and Finance (BMF) Cluster graduation, honoring over 150 students from 10 high schools with five students receiving $500 scholarships to help fund their postsecondary education

At Sherwood High School, a unique tradition has blossomed over the past four years, bringing students together and creating lasting memories. Every day, a group of dedicated students led by Zach Geller and Nick Hammond has gathered at a specific spot in the school– a staircase affectionately dubbed “The DN,” named after the down sign that adorns it. This daily ritual of taking a photo has transformed from a simple idea between two friends into a beloved staple of the school community (photos through the years available below).

In the Montgomery County Circuit Court in Maryland, Judge Jill Cummins sentenced defendant Alex Ye to ten years in prison for threatening to “shoot up” Wootton High School in Rockville in 2024. All but 12 months of the sentence were suspended, and upon release, Ye is to serve five years of supervised probation.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) responded to Farmland Elementary School in the 7000 block of Old Gate Road in Rockville after receiving a report of a suspicious situation involving a student. According to Principal April Longest, the student reported being grabbed by the collar by an unknown man while walking to school near Hitching Post. After a thorough investigation, MCPD determined the case to be unfounded.

Graduation season is here for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), with nearly 13,000 seniors set to receive their diplomas between Wednesday, May 28, and Thursday, June 12. Ceremonies will take place across various venues, including individual high school campuses, DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., Xfinity Center in College Park, MD and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

A major pipe burst at Gaithersburg High School has forced the closure of the special education hallway and approximately 20 classrooms as of Tuesday morning, according to a school source (video below).
