Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Driver in Gaithersburg Saturday Night

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) and Montgomery County police responded to a call for a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Snouffer School Rd. in Gaithersburg on Saturday night. According to our public safety reporter, Cordell Pugh, the pedestrian was deceased upon arrival and Snouffer School Rd. will remain closed between Cherry Laurel Ln. and Flower Hill Way for several hours for collision reconstruction.

Police tweeted the following at 9:32pm, “A collision involving a pedestrian has the 8200 block of Snouffer School Road shut down in both directions. Drivers should seek an alternate route.” We’ll update with additional information when it becomes available. Featured photo courtesy of Google Maps.

Gaithersburg Traffic Advisory For Sunday October 8th

Sunday, October 8 is the City of Gaithersburg Government Annual Oktoberfest celebration. The festivities will be occurring by the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion, and Kentlands Village Green, along Main Street and Inspiration Lane. Starting at 6 a.m. the following streets will be closed and will re-open at approximately 9 p.m.:

Update: Approximately 50 Firefighters Respond to Fire Friday Night in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a fire at a three-story garden apartment at 900 Clopper Rd., near Metropolitan Grove Rd. in Gaithersburg shortly before 8pm on Friday night. According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, smoke coming from the building was revealed to stem from a fire on the second floor. Multiple units responded and the building has been evacuated, with Clopper Road (MD-117) temporarily closed from Metropolitan Grove Road to Firstfield Road until late Friday night.

In an update provided by Piringer on Saturday, approximately 50 firefighters responded to the apartment fire. Two adults were transported to the hospital. One of the adults was located and rescued from the apartment of origin (smoke inhalation), and another adult from a different apartment was transported due to an unrelated medical issue. The cause is still under investigation. Two apartment units were displaces (three adults, one dog, and one cat) and where was approximately $110K in damage.

Silky Gem, America’s First Crystal Candy Shop, Now Open in Kentlands (Gaithersburg)

Silky Gem, which offers crystal candies inspired by Vietnamese Lunar new year traditions, is now open at 332 Main St in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. The store has been described as the first crystal candy shop to open in the United States (photos below).

The shop has held a few events prior to its grand opening and offers a variety of the same crystal candies many have seen on the Silky Gem social media accounts. The grand opening was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 24th, but had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, opening earlier this week. Store hours are 12pm-8pm daily, closed on Tuesdays.

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland– A federal jury returned guilty verdicts yesterday convicting Willie Lamont Hicks, a/k/a “Will Woodward” and “CW,” age 50, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Mary Ann Mendoza, a/k/a “Mary Ann Manuel,” “Trinity,” “M3,” and “Emily James,” age 49, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, on federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud related to a debt elimination and wealth management fraud scheme.

New and Coming Soon to Rio in Gaithersburg (October 2023)

Access to the outdoor dining area/pier will be via two gangways attached to the existing boardwalk. The new structure projects 10’-2” from the boardwalk and will be 12 feet tall from the finished floor. Gaithersburg Planning Staff supports the proposal for a dining pier in the Rio Washingtonian Lake, finding it in compliance with the approved sketch plan and Schematic Development Plan SDP- 9462-2023. “The dining pier will provide additional outdoor seating for Copper Canyon and will enhance the use of lake. There remains adequate parking for the proposed commercial addition and all applicable development standards have been met.” No timeframe for the pier has been announced.

Pho Nom Nom Now Open in Gaithersburg

Pho Nom Nom is now open at 18509 N Frederick Ave at Gaithersburg S.C. (that’s the name of the shopping center), at the former site of Pho Viet Saigon. Pho Nom Nom has an additional location at 842 Rockville Pike. The restaurant specializes in authentic Vietnamese cuisine, including pho, banh mi, noodles and grilled dishes. Full menu can seen below.

Gaithersburg S.C. is home to MoCo’s only Bruster’s and Corner Pizza. The shopping center was also once home to Hechinger, the hardware store that once had over 130 locations in the Mid-Atlantic.

Gaithersburg-Based Novavax’s 2023-2024 Non-mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine Now Authorized and Recommended for Use in the U.S.

Gaithersburg based Novavax has announced that its 2023-2024 protein-based non-mRNA COVID vaccine has received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA and will soon be available in pharmacies nationwide. Novavax’s Silvia Taylor will be joining Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich today at noon for a media briefing. Per Novavax:

“Novavax, Inc. (Nasdaq: NVAX), a global company advancing protein-based vaccines with its novel Matrix-M^™ adjuvant, today announced that the Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted (2023-2024 Formula) (NVX-CoV2601) has received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 in individuals aged 12 and older. Immediately upon authorization, Novavax’s vaccine has also been included in the recommendations issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on September 12, 2023.

Gaithersburg Police Investigating Monday Afternoon Stabbing

The Gaithersburg Police Department is investigating a stabbing that occurred on Monday, October 2. According to police, “Detectives are investigating a stabbing that occurred in the area N. Summit Ave & Park Ave. Today at approx 3:16 p.m., ofcs located a 27-years-old male victim suffering from lacerations. The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
