The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony on Sunday evening. After 15 days, the United States secured 40 gold medals and a total of 126 medals across the various events. While California led the way for the U.S. with 50 medals, Maryland had seven athletes win ten total medals (per the Washington Post).

On Monday, Governor Wes Moore announced $7.3 million in workforce grants to “upskill Maryland’s workforce and make Maryland more competitive in emerging healthcare, information technology, skilled trade, and hospitality industries” through the Employment Advancement Right Now (EARN) Maryland program. On Thursday, Governor Wes Moore announced the launch of the Higher Education Clean Energy Grant Pilot Program, a $9.2 million competitive pilot opportunity to support clean energy transitions within Maryland’s colleges and universities.

According to a news release, “The program will promote both workforce development and Maryland’s climate goals by funding solar installations, comprehensive campus clean energy planning, and specialized renewable energy sector academic programming.


Shop Maryland Tax-Free week begins on Sunday, August 11, and runs through Saturday, August 17. Any clothing and shoes that cost $100 or less will be exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax this week. The first $40 of any backpack will also be exempt from the 6% sales tax.

On Thursday, Governor Wes Moore announced that the Maryland Higher Education Commission has awarded $18.75 million in campus safety grants to Maryland’s colleges and universities, including Montgomery College.
