According to the 2020 census, Maryland’s population is 6,177,224, ranked 18th in the nation. Maryland’s population continues to grow by at least 7% each decade. Before it became the largest high school in Maryland in terms of square footage, Seneca Valley High School (19401 Crystal Rock Dr. Germantown, MD) opened in its original building in 1974. The school sits on land that was once the site of a dairy farm owned by baseball player Walter Johnson. Johnson purchased the land in 1935 and lived there with his family until his death in 1946. It was Germantown’s only high school until Northwest opened in 1998. Seneca Valley ranks 21st in the list of the largest high schools by enrollment in 2024.

The Bay Bridge crosses the Chesapeake Bay along US 50/301. Its dual spans provide a direct connection between recreational and ocean regions on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and the metropolitan areas of Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. On this day, June 28th 1973, the westbound structure opened.
Thunderstorms often come up suddenly and can present a variety of hazards, including power outages, caused by lightning, heavy rains, hail and wind. Such storms usually affect Maryland in the late spring, summer or early fall, but can happen any time cold and warm air masses collide.
