The long, quiet summer is nearly over. The pads are about to start popping. The early morning fog of two-a-days will soon give way to the bright Friday night lights. September 5th marks the official kickoff of the 2025 Montgomery County high school football season, and while the state title games in Annapolis are still months away, the road to December glory begins now.

Silver Spring’s very own Zania Socka-Nguemen, a rising sophomore forward and proud product of Montgomery County, recently played a pivotal role in leading the United States to a gold medal at the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup, held in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 12th to 20th.

Only three weeks separate us from the opening whistles of official practices, and with it, the final chapter of our Montgomery County preseason coverage. Today, we turn our lens to the last five programs still waiting for their moment, four in the revamped 3A West and Poolesville, flying solo in 2A. The truth is, this group carries a disproportionate share of instability, inconsistency, and introspection. For some, 2025 represents a clean slate. For others, it’s about just staying afloat.

In an amazing display of skill and teamwork, the 11u Yellow Jackets Black team emerged victorious at the USSSA Eastern National tournament held in Ocean City. The team, based in Damascus, Maryland, under the Poolesville Athletic Association, showcased their prowess by going undefeated throughout the tournament and clinching the championship game with a decisive 12-1 victory, winning by mercy rule.

Montgomery County’s own Sydney Mednik has been recognized with the prestigious Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award by ESPN. Sydney hails from Potomac, Maryland, and is set to begin her junior year at Winston Churchill High School this fall. A competitive soccer player, she has been a vital part of the Churchill Varsity Soccer Team since her freshman year and actively participates in club soccer.

Desmin Wade has been named the General Manager and assistant coach at Grambling State following an impressive tenure at James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring. At Blake, he compiled a staggering 91-35 record over five years, guiding the program to four Division Championships, one County Championship, and five Regional Championship appearances.

Lead ‘Em Up, a nationally recognized leadership organization founded in Montgomery County in 2015, hosts an annual celebration honoring 13 student-athletes who receive the prestigious Green 13 award. This accolade is awarded to those who have demonstrated exemplary character and leadership. This year, four of the 13 recipients hail from Montgomery County, while the remaining nine are spread across the country.
