On the evening of Sunday, March 22, 1992, a customer at Sugarloaf Mountain Market, located at 23800 Old Hundred Road in Comus, found the owner, 57-year-old James Essel, deceased inside the store– having been stabbed multiple times. Twenty-eight years later, in February 2020, the man whose DNA linked him to the murder was killed by Virginia Beach Police.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) and Manna Food Center will host the annual Ride On Food Drive from May 25 to May 31, allowing riders to donate non-perishable food items on Ride On buses in exchange for free fare, with all donations supporting local residents facing food insecurity.

Lead ‘Em Up, a nationally recognized leadership organization founded in Montgomery County in 2015, hosts an annual celebration honoring 13 student-athletes who receive the prestigious Green 13 award. This accolade is awarded to those who have demonstrated exemplary character and leadership. This year, four of the 13 recipients hail from Montgomery County, while the remaining nine are spread across the country.
