The first week of spring has brought fairly seasonal weather, featuring a couple of colder days with high temperatures in the 50s on Wednesday and Thursday. However, temperatures are expected to warm up slightly on Friday, with a possibility of reaching the 80s on Saturday.
According to the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS), a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Montgomery County from 11 am to 7 pm Wed., 3/26. Conditions will be favorable for brush fires. Outdoor burning is not recommended. (more…)
On Sunday, March 9, at 2 am, we “spring forward” for daylight saving time, losing an hour of sleep but gaining an extra hour of daylight in the evening, with the sun setting at 7:09 p.m. that day. This shift also coincides with an anticipated rise in temperatures, reaching the mid-70s later in the week.
Alert Montgomery issued the following on Wednesday, March 5, at 11:20am: “A Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for Central/Southeast Montgomery County until 4:00 pm Wednesday, 3/5. Expect wind gusts greater than 40 mph. Wind gusts of this magnitude will make driving high profile vehicle difficult, and cause loose outdoor objects to be blown around. Secure loose outdoor objects to prevent property damage.”
The National Weather Service (NWS) has put out a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of eastern West Virginia, northern and central Virginia, and central and western Maryland.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10am this morning to 7pm this evening for strong winds and low relative humidity for most of the immediate area, much of central and northern Maryland (including all of Montgomery County), and Northern Virginia.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) announced Wednesday morning that it will be seeking a state waiver for the required 180 instructional days after schools and offices were closed on Wednesday, Feb. 12 due to inclement weather.

MCPS Weather Update: Code Green – Schools and Offices Open on Time – Thursday, Feb. 20
Many of you probably saw some “mood flakes” today that didn’t accumulate and were harmelss in regards to impact on roads. Tomorrow morning may be a little different as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7am until 11am Thursday for most of the area.
