For over 200 years, the Farmers’ Almanac has been predicting long-range weather forecasts using what they refer to as “a tried-and-true formula that adapts to the mysteries of nature and the ever-changing world in which we live.” So far this fall, we’ve shared summaries of the Old Farmer’s Almanac outlook and FOX 5’s winter outlook. There are actually two competing almanacs: the Farmers’ Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac and both have been published for more than 200 years. Below we take a look at the Farmers’ Almanac outlook for this upcoming winter.

As autumn settles in, many are eagerly anticipating the return of an extra hour of sleep while others lament how early it will be getting dark. With fall in the air, pumpkin spice lattes in full force, and temperatures gradually cooling down (though you wouldn’t be able to tell today and tomorrow), the changing of the clocks is another sign of the season. Fox 5 is the first of the four major local networks to release its 2024/2025 Winter Outlook. Fox had one of the more conservative outlooks last year in a year when most expected above average snowfall. This year, Fox 5 meteorologist Mike Thomas is taking a similar approach in a year where not much snow is expected, which isn’t great news for snow lovers. As always, we take a quick look at the outlook and provide an analysis before comparing all four major network outlooks when they become available.

The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac is now available everywhere complete with its 2024-2025 winter weather forecast. Winter arrives this year on December 21, 2024 and sometimes brings shoveling, snow blowing, dealing with bad roads, and unbearable temperatures with it. Lately, we haven’t had too much snow to talk about in our area, and this winter, according to the almanac, is expected to be”mild and snowy” for our area (map available above) but differs based on specific location. Below, you’ll see forecasts for the Atlantic Corridor and the Appalachians, which covers all of our area.
