Dr. Joseph Bostic, currently a principal intern at Northwood High School and a former MCPS Teacher of the Year, has been appointed acting principal of Thomas S. Wootton High School effective December 10, 2024. This change follows the administrative leave of Principal Doug Nelson on December 9, after an incident where a racial slur was found written on a student’s desk.

Dr. Peter O. Moran, Chief of Schools for MCPS, shared the following message with the Wootton community:


Earlier today we reported that Wootton High School Principal Douglas Nelson has been placed on leave following an incident where a racial slur was found written on a student’s desk, according to a report by ABC7. MCPS Spokesperson Liliana Lopez confirmed that “the principal has been placed on leave.” but did not provide any additional details. As far as we are aware, this his not been communicated to the Wootton community. Since that report, earlier today, a new letter has been sent to the Wootton community informing of an allegation that a staff member used the N-word when discussing the incident from Monday, December 3rd. Rockville’s Lunar New Year celebration will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Rockville High School, and will feature multicultural performances, interactive displays, crafts, and free snacks, marking the Year of the Snake. The 2024 celebration was canceled due to inclement weather. (more…)


Back in May we let you know that Dirty Dough is coming to 36B Maryland Ave in Rockville Town Square. The cookie shop will be taking over the location that was the longtime home of Berry Cup, which closed in the summer of 2022. Dirty Dough made an appearance as a vendor at Rockville Town Square’s tree lighting event and let us know at they are aiming for a Wednesday, December 18th opening.

While the 2025 opening timeframe has been in the plans for Wegmans upcoming Rockville location, including signage at the upcoming location, the grocery store officially announced that Rockville will be one of three new Wegmans stores opening in 2025 and May have given a clue as to when in 2025 we can expect it.

Last month we let you know that the office building at 121 Rockville Pike was being auctioned off by Ten-X later this month with a starting bid of $6 million. The building was previously home to Choice Hotels headquarters prior to the company’s move to Pike & Rose earlier this year, and the winning bid came in at $10.75 million ($10.965 million with transactions fees), according to Maryland Newsletters.

After Jordan Weitz got diagnosed with celiac disease at age 18, around the time he was graduating from Wootton High School in Rockville, checking ingredient lists in packaged goods became the norm. “Throughout his career he kept coming back to one question: Why was the process of finding manufacturers so outdated? He sent a cold message to Keychain cofounder and then-CEO of Angie’s List and Keychain was started.” Now, Weitz has made the 2025 Forbes 30 Under 30 List in the ‘Food & Drink’ section.

On Friday, a letter was sent to the Wootton High School community regarding an incident where a racial slur was found written on a student’s desk. The school postponed a scheduled pep rally to inform students and staff about the incident and announced plans for district staff to work with the school to address the situation and promote a more inclusive environment.
