Buca di Beppo, the family-style Italian dining brand, today announced that it has voluntarily filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas. Buca di Beppo closed its only Montgomery County location at 112 Kentlands Blvd in Gaithersburg on Sunday, June 23. A replacement has not yet signed on.

Back in March 2023, we reported that Umi Hot Pot, Sushi & Seafood Buffet would be taking over the space that was recently home to Miller’s Ale House and previously home to Hooters and Shakey’s at 1471 Rockville Pike in Rockville. The restaurant has made significant progress, and while a specific date isn’t yet available, it appears to be ready to open soon (photos below).

While Maryland has various restaurants that offer amazing burgers, Eater DC had put together a list of “Outstanding Burgers to Try in D.C. Right Now” that includes three Maryland spots that are a little bit closer to the city. The other 17 are in the actual city, with no Virginia restaurants included on the list.

Kura Revolving Sushi continues to work towards opening at 12266 Rockville Pike in Federal Plaza later this year, taking over part of the space that was recently home to Chuy’s and previously home to Ruby Tuesday. Permanent signage is now up (photo by @YaoFomo on instagram) and the full menu is available below. Torchy’s Tacos will be taking over the other part of the space.

Wawa has announced its “Cheers to Classrooms” initiative that toasts teachers and school staff with free any size hot coffee and fountain beverage that will launch in the Mid-Atlantic operating area of PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, NC and Washington D.C. in September 2024.

Last June we let you know that Quincy’s officially signed a lease to bring its new concept, Quincy’s Club House, to 245 Kentlands Blvd. The country club style restaurant, bar, and golf venue is taking over the location that was recently home to Not Your Average Joe’s. A $990,000 permit to begin alterations in the space was approved this past spring and now ownership tells us that they’re hoping for a September/October opening (Fall 2024).

While we usually offer you glances at dishes from across Montgomery County through Taste MoCo, our staff will occasionally travel across the country as you may have seen in our “Top Five Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia” list, and even north of the border to Toronto, Canada to experience a few of the restaurants in the area. In this case, one of our staff members visited Sotto Sotto, Drake’s favorite restaurant in his hometown of Toronto (located at 120 Avenue Rd. Toronto, Canada).
