Woodside Deli in Rockville Has Closed Permanently

Woodside Deli, located at 4 N Washington Street in Rockville, has closed permanently after nearly 12 years in Rockville. The restaurant closed late last week, with signage removed from the building over the weekend. The Silver Spring location closed in 2019 after operating for more than 70 years. While there is a Woodside Deli in Germantown, we have been told that the location is no longer connected to the original Woodside Deli. Full statement from the owners available below:

The new Dunkin/Baskin Robbins located in the recently renovated Rock Grove Center on the corner of 355 and Shady Grove relocated back on Monday, July 25. The new location in on the back side of the shopping center at the old United Bank location at 16268 Frederick Rd. On Thursday, August 4th, the store will be holding its grand opening.

Pollo-Mex Closes After 12 Years in Colesville

Pollo-Mex Chicken and Mexican Grill has closed after 12 years in the Colesville Center. The windows at the restaurant have been papered and a notice is posted on its door stating that July 31 was its last day of business. The website offers the following message:

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is Coming to Montgomery Village

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is coming to the Montgomery Village Shopping Center, according to KLNB realty. The restaurant will be located in the brand new space next to the upcoming Starbucks. Earlier this year Hangry Joe’s opened a location at 2533 Ennals Ave in Wheaton and has additional locations opening at 10050 Darnestown Road in the Travilah Square shopping center and at 718-B Rockville Pike.

Hangry Joe’s joins a growing list of restaurants that are all expected to open in the redeveloped shopping center by the end of this year that includes Antojitos Salvadoreños Isabel, Boo Boo’s Pho, Dickey’s BBQ, and Kobe Japan. The Joint chiropractic care center and Safe Splash Swim School have also signed leases and will coming to the center.

Naz’s Halal Rockville to Hold Grand Opening Celebration That Includes a Free Platter

Naz’s Halal will be opening its Rockville location on Saturday, August 6th at 1040 Rockville Pike in Edmonston Crossing– the shopping center that’s home to Iron Age. The restaurant recently opened a Germantown location and has a White Oak location coming soon, in addition to the Burtonsville location that opened in 2020. Naz’s is offering a free platter for its grand opening (QR code available below).

The first location outside of New York was also in MoCo, at the Burtonsville Town Center, next to Tropical Smoothie Cafe. That location opened in August 2020 and has become a local favorite with late night hours, remaining open until 2am Sunday through Thursday and 4am on Friday and Saturday.

District Falafel to Open in Old Fu Shing Cafe Location Next to Montgomery Mall

District Falafel will be taking over the location that was most recently home to The Wok Chinese Kitchen and previously home to longtime favorite Fu Shing Cafe at 10315 Westlake Drive in the Westlake Crossing shopping center, located next to Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The restaurant hopes to open by the end of September.

Fu Shing Cafe closed permanently in Westlake Crossing in July of 2019. Soon after Soy Kitchen was announced as the restaurant that would be taking its place, with signage going up, but that signage was replace with signage for The Wok about a year later. The Wok opened in November 2020. A menu for District Falafel’s food truck, and a couple photo of menu items, can be seen below:

Three Montgomery County Restaurants Win 2022 RAMMY Awards

Restaurant industry professionals and their fans gathered at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center earlier this week for the 40th Annual RAMMY Awards as Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) announced winners and a range of special distinctions in a number of categories celebrating excellence in long-standing and pandemic-era categories that range from individual professional honors to accolades celebrating culinary concepts and service. Three Montgomery County restaurants were presented with awards.

For 2022, the RAMMYS returned with a program of familiar categories honoring RAMW members, representing a year during which the industry rebuilt, recovered, and grew with new establishments. A selection of categories also spoke to pandemic-era aspects that both restaurants and diners have continued to enjoy and employ – all of which were decided via public vote earlier this year. Another carryover from last year, publicly voted categories were open to any foodservice operation in the region.

Montgomery Village Shopping Center Update

Signage has been installed at the Antojitos Salvadoreños Isabel, which is coming to 19114 Montgomery Village Ave, the former Einstein Bagel Bros location. We first reported that a new Salvadoran restaurant would be coming to the Village in May. Construction on the interior of the restaurant is ongoing and a representative tells us they hope to open by October. The restaurant will serve popular Salvadorian dishes like pupusas, tamales, and yuca con chicharron, as well as traditional Salvadorian cuisine such as pastelitos. La Poteria, which sells Colombian street food and coffee, is located next door.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit previously opened its second Maryland location in Montgomery County when it opened in Germantown in February 2013. The restaurant closed the following year and reopened under new management in July 2014 before closing permanently in early 2016. The first Maryland location was in Gambrills, but has since closed. Currently there are nearby locations in Pasadena, MD, two in Fairfax VA, and one in Alexandria VA. There is no expected opening date at the moment.

Construction Begins at Lum Thai in Muddy Branch Square

In June 2021 we let you know that Lum Thai would be coming to Muddy Branch Square, in the space previously occupied by Roggenart and Canela Bakery at 806 Muddy Branch Road. Since then things have been mostly quiet, but renovations began for the upcoming restaurant a couple weeks back (photo below). We stopped by earlier this week and the previous bakery counter that was located at the front of the store is now gone, with construction underway.

Lum Thai is a Thai food and chicken restaurant, according to signage, but we have not been able to find out too much more about the restaurant. A restaurant in Jacksonville, FL with the same name and similar font used in its logo has told us there is no connection between the two restaurants. Based on current construction progress, we anticipate an early 2023 opening for the restaurant. We will provide additional information as soon as we have it.

Max’s Kosher Cafe Closes on Thursday (7/28)

Earlier this month, Max’s Kosher Cafe at 2319 University Blvd W in Wheaton announced that its last day in business will be July 28, 2022. The restaurant, known for their falafel, shawarma, fried chicken, and deli sandwiches, has been a Wheaton staple for nearly three decades. According to a Bethesda Beat report, the cafe hopes to open again in the Kemp Mill shopping center, which is the home of Shalom Kosher- a supermarket owned by The Shalom Group (owners of Max’s). “We hope that people will voice their opinions and voice their feelings and hopefully we’ll be able to get it into the shopping center here,” he said in the interview.

Update on Bourbon, Wings, and Beer, the Restaurant Taking Over the Buffalo Wings and Beer Location in Cloverly

We spoke with Bourbon, Wings, and Beer management who told us they hope to open by the end of August. B.W.B. LLC had a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) on May 19th at 10am where it was granted its “Class B Beer, Wine, and Liquor License, On Sale Only.” Renovations inside have been ongoing and should soon be complete. While the restaurant hopes to open by the end of August, we were told that it’s just a goal for now.

Back in January, we let you know that Buffalo Wings and Beer had closed in the Cloverly Village Center (15412 New Hamphire Ave). In February we let you know that the restaurant will once again open, as it will be taken over by the owners of Dominic’s Italian Grille in Colesville. The BWB name will remain, but the acronym will have a slightly different meaning as the restaurant will now be named Bourbon, Wings, and Beer.
