The City of Rockville will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at Courthouse Square Park to honor the 11 Montgomery County residents who lost their lives in the attacks, featuring a presentation of colors and remarks by Mayor Monique Ashton.

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, MCDOT began an emergency closure of Wasche Road from W. Hunter Road to Martinsburg Road in Dickerson to replace failing twin corrugated pipes with twin concrete pipes, with local traffic allowed up to 19754 Wasche Road, a signed detour in place, weekday work hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the closure expected to last about three weeks. Update from the GoFundMe fundraiser: “Darwins case is still under investigation, and we were updated today that his tragedy was due to a hit and run. Thank you so much for your help and compassion.”

The community is rallying to support the family of Darwin Garcia Lopez, an 18-year-old from Gaithersburg who passed away on September 2, after suffering a severe head injury when he hit a pothole while riding his electric bike home from the gym. A fundraiser has been launched to help his grieving family cover funeral expenses and honor his memory during this difficult time.


The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is advising residents on safe ways to manage spotted lanternflies, warning against using sticky traps, glue traps, insecticides, or harmful homemade mixtures, as these can unintentionally harm birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. Instead, officials recommend using circle traps to capture the insects and encourage residents to report sightings across the state to support research and management efforts. (more…)
