Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to a significant apartment fire near Rio in Gaithersburg Thursday night, resulting in multiple rescues and several families being displaced.


Montgomery County Council committees will meet on April 10 to review portions of the Fiscal Year 2027 Operating Budget and FY27-32 Capital Improvements Program, including funding for agencies such as the Ethics Commission, Board of Elections, Public Information Office, and several non-departmental accounts, while also examining a $3 million supplemental appropriation for the continued development of the Community Connect Portal. A coordinated traffic enforcement effort across Montgomery County and surrounding jurisdictions resulted in hundreds of stops and violations as agencies focused on improving roadway safety during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The multi-agency initiative took place on April 8, targeting major roadways including Georgia Avenue, New Hampshire Avenue, University Boulevard, and MD-200. The effort brought together local and state law enforcement agencies in a unified push to identify and address dangerous driving behaviors, with a particular emphasis on distracted driving.

Montgomery County Public Schools is reminding families and staff of a key calendar update tied to this year’s weather-related schedule changes. Wednesday, April 15 will now be an early release day for students, serving as one of the district’s designated inclement weather make-up days.

A Poolesville High School student has been named a National STEM Champion, earning a spot among some of the top young innovators in the country. Sathvik Dasari was selected as one of just 55 students nationwide recognized through the National STEM Challenge, securing an invitation to the National STEM Festival, which will take place in Washington, D.C. from June 24-27.

Six restaurants in Maryland have earned spots on Eater DC’s Spring 2026 “38 Best Restaurants Around DC” list, highlighting some of the region’s most defining dining destinations.
