Unibal-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has defaulted on a roughly $235 million securitized loan tied to Westfield Wheaton– the largest mall in suburban Maryland and the fourth-largest in the Greater Washington area. The mall was originally built in 1958 and was known as Wheaton Plaza– the first shopping mall in Montgomery County.

Montgomery Parks and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Purple Line completed a new fish passage project at a stream underpass of Piney Branch Road in the Long Branch community, helping to restore habitat for migratory fish and supporting local aquatic communities.

On Monday, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich vetoed Expedited Bill 2-25, which would have provided a 20-year, 100% property tax exemption for converting underused commercial buildings into rental housing, arguing it lacked fiscal safeguards, offered excessive benefits to developers without proven need, and could harm county revenues, racial equity, and community stability.
