Donutchew, a mochi donut shop, is coming to Rio Lakefront taking over the location that was formerly home to Starbucks next to Fantasticks at 213 Boardwalk Place in Rio.
Earlier this afternoon we spoke with a representative who told us construction has already begun and that Donutchew expects to open in approximately three months.
Stay Social is moving in to 201 Boardwalk Place– the old Jos. A. Bank spot in Rio.
Formerly more of a selfie museum, Stay Social is pivoting and becoming a free admission content hub for local social media “influencers.”
Locally Crafted, a retail shop that carries original art and artisan goods created exclusively by local makers,is now open at 125 Boardwalk Place (formerly Ann Taylor) at Rio in Gaithersburg.
According to owners Stacey Hammer & Heather Luxenberg, some of the unique products they will feature include art, jewelry, home décor, personal wellness (candles, body care, etc), fiber art, fashion accessories, pottery & ceramics, and gourmet treats.
BurgerFi, an American fast casual restaurant chain focused on hormone-free and antibiotic-free angus hamburgers, french fries, hot dogs, custard, and more, is coming to Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg.
The restaurant will be opening at 5 Grand Corner Ave, across from Dick’s Sporting Goods and next to Lanzhou Hand Pull Noodles.
Opening Date For New Rio Playground Announced
The new playground at Rio will be opening on Wednesday, July 7th. According to Rio, the 8500 sq. ft open-air playground features slides, a rotating climber, sensory play, an ADA -accessible surface, and shade pavilions to keep kids cool while they play.

Fantasticks in Rio Now Open
Fantasticks, a customizable gelato bar and pop shop, is now open in Rio.
It has been over a year and a half since we let you know that True Food Kitchen would be taking over the old Joe’s Crab Shack location in Rio (221 Rio Blvd Ste 0221, Gaithersburg, MD)
At the end of the summer the restaurant had made progress with the exterior, but the interior had a lot of work left to go. There hasn’t been any progress since then (as seen in the photos below).
